Benning rolls dice to save his job

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 17, 2021
Published: Nov. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After looking at the end results of this the 2nd and 3rd pair defense might be legendary in how awful they are.
Trades
VAN
  1. Kane, Evander ($3,240,000 retained)
  2. Vlasic, Marc-Édouard ($3,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Probably a bad move for the Sharks to tie up money like this in retained salary for this long but worth hearing opinions on this
SJS
  1. Ekman-Larsson, Oliver
Additional Details:
Kane is a deplorable human being but he is a great hockey player. This trade is a last gasp by Benning to save his job.

It might not be. My thinking is it rids Sharks of Vlasic and Kane. It does saddle them with OEL but he has been better this year and is far superior to Vlasic.

Getting rid of Kane doesn't matter if you aren't saving salary, and I'd easily rather have Vlasic over OEL.

Vlasic over OEL? But why? As far as Kanes salary, I haven't done the math, not sure I could, but I agree if it's cheaper just to cut him then so be it.

Ekman-Larsson has been pretty good for Vancouver this year imo. This trade brings in a malcontent and a near 40-year-old defender for a good piece of VAN team.

Benning should simply cap dump Myers and look at potential improvements down the road.

I like the idea of giving Kane and Vlasic the heave-ho, but two issues pop up. First Vlasic has an NMC and he outright stated last season he and his dogs had no interest in ever leaving the Bay Area. Secondly, I don't like the idea of retaining while having to deal with OEL's contract. OEL could be a fit, but we have lots of younger (and cheaper) defensemen coming from our farm system now and the last thing we need is another expensive defenseman holding our youngsters back.

Vlasic played his best game in basically 3 years two nights back. Could be a flash in the pan but if he can string some together Boughner may have found a way to get him back on track. His pairing with Simek just went sour. The retention on Vlasic is something Wilson would never do particularly not for multiple seasons. It's an easy pass.

As far as Kane, buying him out at seasons end is still the best solution for us. His buyout isn't crazy expensive and who know maybe someone grabs him off waivers. All the Kane trades on here are shortsighted with obscene retention and sending Eklund with him...His buyout is pretty swallowable.

To Sum Up:
Kane - Bought out.
Vlasic - Will probably finish this contract as a Shark, for better or worse.
