No we really don't want Lavoie, we want a 1st or Bourgault and if we are taking Turris back we want both especially with the retention

Decent alternative to the usual 1st. Might need to up the 3rd to a 2nd, because I think Montreal will take a 1st over this (if one is available), or they will be able to do a similar trade without taking any cap back.

Huge overvalue on Chiarot. With 50% retention his peak value is likely a 1st on it's own. Cost to take Turris should be minimal, at the TDL you're talking 1/4 of a season for a $1.65mil AAV. Throwing in both to make the trade work is laughable, for that price they could actually get a good player.

We all know the stats. We also know most GMs don't overemphasize the value of them. There are no stats for things like grit and determination. There are no stats for footspeed or brainfarts.
GMs see a defender type that plays hard and can handle heavy minutes, will play physical and protect teammates, and/or plays a game that complements a partner they have in mind or their system.
People also use advanced stats which are more or less in their infancy. There is no pinpoint accurate method of evaluating defensive ability. There are simply too many factors and not enough relevant data.
A goal against is normally a team effort, but there are no assists for goals against. Controlled exits likewise are team efforts, but are also part of some team's systems. Is it Chiarot's fault when he dumps the puck out of the zone, or is that a result of him doing what he's been told to do? In short, numbers are often unkind to defenders, as are visual cues, since they are the last mistake seen on a goal against, but are often simply put into an untenable situation by their team.
Campabee and BeterChiarelli liked this.

Turris holds no value to Montreal, we are not contending or even making the playoffs with the hope of a magical run. Edmonton also doesn't need to add Turris to the deal to make the cap work, therefore it is strictly being done as a cap dump, which you will have to pay for. Since Chiarot is already rumored to be worth a 1st now, at the deadline that likely increases to a 1st + 3rd adding in taking Turris back that becomes pretty close to a 1st + top prospect, since Lavoie is more of a winger and we desperately need centers everywhere in the organization we would want Bourgault instead.

1/4 season of a contract like Turris maybe costs a 4th to dump if you were go that route. Peak Chiarot value at 50% retained is probably a 1st. A 1st plus a 4th does not equal 2x 1sts.

You're putting too much weight into what Savard got last year. Tampa was very willing to overpay coming off of a cup and in position to win another one. Savard is also a better defenseman than Chiarot. Also, don't discount the Lefty/Righty factor, RH shooting D are always more in demand. Outside of Savard, most D moved at the deadline last year went for a 3rd to a 5th. Oilers got Kulikov for a 4th, Boston got Reilly for a 3rd, Montour to Florida for a 3rd...
