Revised JT Miller Deal

Created by: TraeYoung
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 17, 2021
Published: Dec. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know the team shows as under the cap by $50k. That’s because I have an extra roster player up in Chiasson from this trade. I anticipate the Penguins never being fully healthy so he would not need to be sent down until the team is at that state. However, I moved the injured guys to the lineup to show the big picture. Chiasson or Simon could be demoted in this scenario.

Also, for the trade, Poulin in theory could be changed with Legare or PO Joseph or even Tristan Broz.

Also, for the second powerplay, I really like the options that the Pens have when healthy. Marino tends to be on the second powerplay but I’d like to give Matheson a shot there. You could play both and take Zucker off, if anything.

Thanks for reading everyone!
Trades
PIT
  1. Chiasson, Alex
  2. Miller, J.T. ($2,625,000 retained)
Additional Details:
JT Miller has to have at least some salary retained for it to work for the Penguins unless Zucker or Matheson is the return. Alex Chiasson is extra depth for a playoff run and his finishing and powerplay percentages add an extra toolkit to this team. His value should not be much.
VAN
  1. Almeida, Justin
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi
  3. Poulin, Samuel
  4. 2022 1st round pick (PIT)
  5. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
All three are Rutherford draft picks. Poulin may not progress much but a change of scenery to a place with less forward talent, at least after some trades, could spark something for the kid. Almeida is a smaller prospect but could look to contribute to a NHL bottom six in his later years. He’s more of a sweetener for Chiasson if anything. The picks, while hopefully late, give the Canucks more capital to work with. A 2nd in the 2023 draft is valuable as it’s a deep class. Hopefully the 2nd helps sweeten the pot for the salary retention. I hope this is a bit better, though I know it’s not perfect.

I dont think Almeida adds anything to the deal, hes a 5th round pick going nowhere really.

Chiasson is a nice add (although dealt seperately at deadline, he gets a 4th from anybody) and overall it looks good, but I think that deal without almeida is probably about right for miller and retention, adding chiasson probably means PIT should add a slightly better prospect.

Well, to be fair, I’m going off of my knowledge of the prospects and thankfully I get to watch Wilkes Barre a lot. I like Almeida as a lesser Blueger type and that’s valuable. Rutherford and Clancey would have their opinions on him. I’m sure you can throw in Gruden or Almari or whomever. Maybe even POJ if the 2nd became a 3rd. It’s all about the big picture here I didn’t want to waste time figuring out the perfect 2nd prospect to throw in

You can revise it as much as you want, it's not gonna happen without Marino

So much desire on here for an underperforming RD making a good chunk of change. Really odd to me, especially given the Canucks cap situation. Oh well, to each their own

I think this is fair value for Miller. Hes gonna walk from Van at the end of next year. So instead of that happening they get younger cheaper top 6 guy + a good prospect + 1st and 2nd. Pens get an elite forward to play with Malkin

I really think Miller fits what Pittsburgh’s style is and hes a home town kid so that’s always fun. I would never underestimate Rutherfords affection for former players. And a first is still a first, you never know what can happen.

Thank you for the nice comment. Good change of pace on here.

Miller doesn't have to walk. We could keep him if we wanted to.

Is it an ok offer? Sure, but it definitely doesn't blow the Canucks away or address any team needs. You said it yourself, Miller is elite. There is no reason for the Canucks to trade him for a 'meh' offer.

I think the reason is because hes going to walk? (sure you guys are good under Bruce right now) But your team sucks and have such a contract mess at D that you wont be a true contender until Miller is out of his prime. If I were him I would walk. Although definetly give it a shot to sign him again as you still have him for 2 years.
