Making the Oilers a Top 3 Team in the NHL

Created by: FrolikMyBalls
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 17, 2021
Published: Dec. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the greatest Oilers Armchair GM of all time.

Only change I would maybe make is if Chicago is willing to trade Kubalik. If so, make a big offer for him and don't trade for strome. Otherwise everything else is the same.

Either way, this roster is real solid. Just shows the oilers are pretty much two trades away from greatness as long as those trades bring in the right players and they don't hurt their roster.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Strome, Dylan
Additional Details:
Strome requested trade. Chicago gets a roster player and draft picks. Edmonton puts Strome on McDavid's wing hoping to ignite their chemistry from the Erie Otters.
CHI
  1. Kassian, Zack
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Kassian is a little overpaid so a bit of a contract dump so chicago gets better picks than they'd otherwise get. I'd imagine if it were just some AHL player going to Chicago instead of Kassian, they'd MAYBE get a 2nd, but more likely something like a 3rd and a 5th.
2.
EDM
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
  2. Hutton, Carter
Additional Details:
Arizona actually trades Chychrun and gets a young former 2nd round pick and a haul of picks.
ARI
  1. Koskinen, Mikko
  2. Lavoie, Raphael
  3. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
  5. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Chychrun solidifies Edmonton's D core and single handedly brings it from decent to elite. Edmonton tanks their future and doesn't need to worry because they have a very strong prospect pool.
3.
EDM
  1. Sanford, Zachary
  2. 2022 5th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Ottawa gets a promising young defenseman who could be NHL ready right away and Senators legend Kyle Turris. They don't lose much at all in Sanford and a 5th so this is solid trade for them.
OTT
  1. Samorukov, Dmitri
  2. Turris, Kyle
Additional Details:
Edmonton adds depth, size, and grit without losing a roster player. Kyle Turris hasn't worked out in Edmonton at all so he's going to Ottawa for salary.

Ottawa is not giving up Sanford and a pick for a middling prospect and a guy we wouldn't claim off waivers.

Try again.

I'd rather have a hard nosed grinder like Kassian for the playoff run, not a weak Dylan Strome.

Hawks decline. Those picks can cover the Kassian dump but you have to pay for strome too. Also, he never requested a trade

Kyle Turris will never work for an Eugene Melnyk owned organization again

No reason ottawa should be paying Edmonton too add to the oilers depth. Pass.

In order to be a top 3 team, don’t you need to have an actual elite goalie?

I'd actually argue that you don't. You need a goalie you can trust as a starter and you need to hope they bring the best of the best in playoffs. Obviously a few teams are lucky, but most great teams will have a middle of the pack starter. Mike Smith can potentially provide this, and maybe stuart skinner in the future.

Sanford really strikes me as a rental for Ottawa, and I could easily see a scenario in which they decide they'd rather fill his role with a young forward next season and they figure picking up a mid-tier prospect for him is a win.

I could've sworn he did, but that's my bad I guess. But strome really doesn't have much value. The only season he produced was playing with Kane and DeBrincat, and he's proven he cannot produce without elite talent surrounding him. 30-40 point players aren't worth a ton, but I definitely could be undervaluing strome or overvaluing kassian.

NHL becoming much less about grit. I could see the Oilers liking Kassian a lot as a 4th liner, but at 3.2 million he's just too much. Dylan strome solidifes Edmonton's top 9 by ensuring there's 3 lines that can all put the puck in the net. Furthermore, the whole intent of trading for Zach Sanford is to bring some good physicality back into the lineup on a much more favourable contract. Sanford can provide just as much as Kassian in terms of physicality.

If you think he doesn't have value, which isn't true, then we have no problem keeping him. Whenever he plays he plays well for the most part. No one in Chicago as far as the media and fans understand why he's constantly a healthy scratch or playing a 4th line grind role which he isn't good in.

Strome is easily a 50-70 point guy playing with Mcdavid or Drai just like his brother is playing with Panarin.

Mike Smith is almost 40, he won’t be your starter for long. I guess if the Oilers gotta win, it’s gotta be this year before Nurse’s massive contract kicks in
