Pavelski and Sekera if Stars are sellers

Description
Great idea posted by Bruinadian67, but in his post the return to Dallas wasn't quite right, so I decided to have my own crack at it.

I have sent DeBrusk down to the minors for cap reasons, since he seems to have zero to none interest around the league. If he gets picked up on waivers then so be it, Bruins wouldn't have qualified him anyway. If he clears, then he can be brought back up for the playoffs.

Trade is maybe a little bit of an overpay imo but aren't rentals usually acquired in an overpay type of trade anyway? Especially with tight cap situations which is what we have here.

Pavelski with 50% retention = 1st and a 2nd
Sekera with 50% retention = 3rd

Return can of course be tweaked around by conditional picks and personal preference on this site, but either way Bruins are capable to acquire them.

Now with the lineup. Which middle6 would Bruins fans prefer?

Hall - Pavelski - Smith
Haula - Coyle - Foligno

or

Hall - Coyle - Pavelski
Foligno - Haula - Smith

Any thoughts on the trade, fit or the lineup?

It's not that DeBrusk doesn't have interest, it's that Boston isn't going to give him away. They are in no rush to trade him and I also wouldn't 100% say that they wouldn't QO him.

5M … you already have Marchand Hall Foligno stacked on your LW

I can agree that it might not be the smartest thing to put DeBrusk on waivers, because I really can't see him get cleared. But if Bruins are able find a taker for him you're going to sell very low on him. But then again that cap space could be used to target on a better defenseman than Sekera, so it would be the smartest thing to do.

So you cant send debrusk down he is claimed in 2 seconds. I cant see Sweeney trading 3 picks like that but if they were going to this isnt a terrible return. Id still think theyvshould target a center not a winger.

Deal. We will not have the Cap space to sign Pavelski back and we will be out of a PO spot.

$5m what? Foligno has been garbage this year and is best suited for the 4th line grinder role. He hasnt scored a goal since like April and not to mention Folgino also plays RW, which he has for most of this season.

If they were willing to "sell low" then DeBrusk would have already been traded.

Thing is that the rental market for centers is very slim. Only notable ones that I can think of are Hertl, Tierney and Eakin. So if Bruins dont go after Hertl then Pavelski is very much the next best thing as he can also play center. Plus there is still a chance that Hertl signs an extension with Sharks.

That might change come TDL. Bruins would be better of using DeBrusk’s cap space for players to help them in the playoffs. I just cant see them qualifying him since he just isn’t worth over 4mil and would still be left on the 3rd line below Marchand and Hall.

DeBrusk is currently 5th in goals for Boston despite being buried in a bottom 6 role. He's not a guy whose going to carry a line and his linemates this year have been awful. His top 3 linemates this year... Haula, Lazar & Nosek. For reference, he has more points than all 3 and has as many goals as those 3 have combined.

Still not worth over 4mil + as a team you dont want to have player making 4mil in the 3rd line + he wants out. Just cant see him being a Bruin next year.

But there is a way to keep him on the 3rd line for a cup run and bumping Foligno down to the 4th line role. This is made possible If they were able make a 3way trade where a third party would retain half of Pavelski’s already retained salary making his cap hit 1,75mil.

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
Hall - Coyle - Pavelski
DeBrusk - Haula - Smith
Foligno - Nosek - Lazar

This would be a decent forward core heading to the playoffs.

Foligno makes just under $4 million ($3.8 million) and at best he's 3rd liner. Coyle makes $5.25 million and he's really a 3C on a contender. Could they not QO DeBrusk? Sure, but I'm not going to say 100% that they wouldn't QO him.

I agree that Dallas should take this deal, but the Stars have a lot of cap space this offseason. They could easily re-sign Pavelski if they seriously wanted to.

Fair enough, but Coyle and Foligno are pretty much examples of not so good contracts.

Right but the difference is those 2 have no room for growth. DeBrusk is only 25yr old and has shown the ability to put pucks in the net when put in a position to succeed... something he hasn't had in Boston for a few years now.

Let's not forget that his QO isn't the end all be all. He could sign an extension with Boston (or whatever team he gets traded to) for less than his QO if he were to get say a 2yr deal that takes him to UFA status? Maybe if the money made sense

1yr / $4.4 million and still an RFA
2yr / $3 million and a UFA

Pavelski would cost around 7M$ again. I don’t see why he would get less with his production. If you sign him for that amount, you don’t have enough to sign Klingberg and complete a 23 players roster. A lot will depend on how much Robertson and Oettinger will cost next year.

If he's looking for $7M, the Stars should absolutely let another team pay that price. But even if he is looking for $7M, the Stars have the ability to pay him that, Klingberg $8.25M, and give guys like Oettinger & Robertson the high end of what they may be looking for. Literally all Dallas would have to do is find a trade partner for either Faksa or Khudobin.

All that being said, I don't go anywhere near Pavelski if he's looking for $7M a year next season. You don't pay 37-year old's that kind of money.
