I would think we could get more for that package, Edmonton would need to have another team retain on Price as well but to me there is a fit if the cap can be worked/split between 3 teams

Sooo Edmonton pays a fortune for a guy who hasn’t even played this year and on top of it this causes Edmonton to loose the goalie they have spent 4 years developing within the system and has played games this year. Skinner isn’t waiver exempt next year and smith is under contract for another year. Moving kosk only helps if bringing in a rental like MAF.

7.7 is a crazy amount still for Price. I think the best way forward is to use these assets to get someone better on D and to get a 3rd team involved to make that price cap hit more manageable. We forget that he had issues with staying healthy which has to be considered into his contract value (especially its term)

Can anyone name an example of a 3rd team retaining multiple years of a contract?

and that is why Price doesn't make sense at all. Also we forget about his knee issues

Posters keep bringing it up as if it's common. I can't think of it ever happening.

Yeah, I brought it up as a point of why it doesn't make sense at all. Because the only way it should happen is through a 3 way salary split

Teams tight to the cap (that's over half the league) can't afford Price becuase A - he's expensive B - they need a solid (and probably well paid 1B).

Teams with plenty of cap are likely rebuilding and shouldn't spend assets on Price (as he wouldn't help when they are contending, and he wouldn't waive to go to those teams).

Doesn't leave a lot of options,

Yeah, I double quoted you as I wanted to tag Campabee, MTL fans seem to bring it up as an easy option/solution.

I legit don't know if it's ever been done. If it has, it's rare.

I found one. Derrick Brassard traded from Ottawa through Vegas to Pittsburgh. Vegas retained for 1/4 of a season = $462K in 17/18, and a full $2M in 18/19.

So, that was Vegas' first season (had plenty of cap) and they got Reaves + 4th for their troubles.

Still a long ways away from some team retaining for 4.5 seasons at likely $2M+.

theres been 4 trades in the last 20 years that have had long term retention (longer than 1year).

Backes 1.5m for a year and a half.
Carter 2.6m for a year and a half.
kessel 1.2m for eternity
OEL 990K for eternity

not only are these cases BEYOND rare where theres a team willing to retain multiple years... theres never 2 willing to do so. long term retention on price youde need to pay a significant premium as thats what another 4 years of dead cap at whatever cap hit youre retaining? no chance. just no chance.

Especially with the league as a whole not making as much $$. What owner wants to set fire to $8M+ for a draft pick(s).
