What if they just pay Meier

Created by: Waffelz

Description
If Timo Meier holds the pace he's on right now, he's going to put up 90+ points. If he holds that pace for two years, does his $10m QO look a little more tempting? He's going to be 26 at the end of his current deal, right in his prime. With kanes deal off the books, a couple of mediocre contracts shipped out, and hopefully a couple million extra in the cap, keeping Meier and Hertl MIGHT be doable. Sure, the defense is a million years old. Sure, youre going to have issues finding cap further down the road for your younger guys. Sure, the cap might not go up.

BUT, if you follow my rules, this might work.

1. Sign a middle six right wing and a third line center, but make sure that their deals expire before you need to pay Eklund.
2. Don't, under any circumstance, pay a goalie. Get a couple cheap guys like you did this year.
3. Find a way to get Simek and Labanc out without giving up too much. Hell, give them away for free. Their contracts are bloated and neither is working out for us.
4. Hope that your young defensemen can keep your older guys together.
5. Don't sell the farm for anything. If you give up assets in these next few years, you're just going to find yourself in another bad spot in 2025.
6. Be prepared to buy out the last year or two of some of the older guys deals if you want to stay competitive. I'm taking about guys like Vlasic, Burns, even Couture & eventually Karlsson.
7. Don't overpay guys who had a good streak in the middle of the year. This has happened a lot with the Sharks, especially on European prospects (guys like Sorenson & Melker Karlsson).

You could file for team arbitration and get him for as low as 8M

I think Meier takes a more team friendly deal at 8m.

Even better! How does the team get him signed for under his QO though? Can he sign an extension before the end of next season?

Chances are Bordeleau makes the team next year, he’s not even on the team in 23-24 here…no weisblatt or Robins?

A team can file for arbitration in lieu of a QO. The only difference between that and player arbitration is that they are still eligible to sign an offer sheet

What would you rather have 10mil for 1 year or 8mil for 8 years? That's a 10mil total vs 64mil contract, more incentive on both sides to sign for 8mil.

I like the tought here! I would however buy Vlasic out after this current season. SJS would save some cap and also open up a roster spot for One of the many talanted LHD they have. You also forgot to put their current top prospects into considerstion for this One, except for Eklund ofc. Borderleou, Robins, Ozzy, Coe, Knyziaev, Hakanta and the top picks from 22’ and 23’.

With all these prospects, Hertl could be a good player to sell at this coming trade deadline. He should fetch a good pick, good prospect and some B-prospects / 2nd/3rd rounders. Those 7.25m could therefore be used to sign stopgap players, to help with the development of the eariler lektioner prospects.
