Funny how the accepted truth is Matthews is a 1 dimensional player. Selke is a reputation award that has nothing to do with defence anymore.

I always always felt that Matthews and Marner have always gotten credit for good defensive play.

If your unit has the puck in the opponents zone often, fewer scoring opportunities against. That is often how some guys thought of more as offensive players do well with xGAR-d.

Matthews analytically is one of the best defensive players in the game. He is never even considered for the Selke

he won't win a Selke until Keefe lets him kill penalties...every Selke winner has been a PK guy since they started tracking

The Selke is a joke, much like the Norris. It's just a reputation award. Actual play has very little to do with who wins.

awesome to see Ryan McLeod on this list, he has always had NHL ready defense and his years in the AHL were just to develop his offense
