Offseason Flat Cap

Created by: YYZ019
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rules: No adding payers with no NHL experience to the roster. Keep the budget within last years cap so there's room for waivers and deadline moves

The Avalanche are losing players this offseason, no doubt about that. They just don't have the cap space to bring the gang back together. Now comes the task of replacing them.

First lets deal with the RFA's

Bridge Aube-Kubel. Just do it, the money likely won't be much (but I've undervalued him on this contract) but cap space is needed

Most of the players that Colorado have been linked to are Pending UFA's so let's grab a few:

One player Colorado has been linked to that is not a pending UFA is Jani Hakanpaa. He is cheap depth and shouldn't be too hard to acquire.

Next up, Nazem Kadri. After this monster season, he needs to be brought back. Not only filling a key role as a second-line center but also someone who can score not on the top line or on defense. The contract is steep but necessary to bring him back

I think that the Avalanche lose Burakovsky, and as much as that hurts, it's necessary

Valeri Nichushkin is a meme (better than Drai am I right?) but a meme who can play top-six minutes until a prospect replaces him

Next, the goalie situation. Francouz proved in 2020 that he is a fringe starter as long as you don't burn him out. I've seen people give him contracts near 4 million which is unreasonable for him. He's good but nobody is giving him 4 million. I've signed him to a contract that gives him a pay raise but a realistic one

Kevin Lankinen has struggled but has shown flashes of being a quality starter. I think it would be worth taking a chance on him after this year. It's a one year deal so there's less risk involved

Another player Colorado has been linked to? Vladislav Namestnikov. A slight overpayment but he's a solid middle-six option

For additional depth Kevin Connauton and bringing back, Kiefer Sherwood for a year are solid options for cheap

This team should still be able to go for it and have a decent amount of cap space to bring back Mackinnon next offseason.

With our RHD depth Jani is worth more to the team than a late pick. DEFINITELY not giving him to Rado

DAL have no reason to move Hakanpää for absolutely nothing.

Pretty realistic. I think hakanpaa gets more though. I’d like a bonafide starter myself. But would probably mean letting Kadri walk instead of burakovsky

Avs won’t go to $7.5M for Kadri, somebody is going to pay for career year I just don’t see the Avs doing it.

Maybe, but Kadri is needed more than Burakovsky and Gaudreau will get significantly more money

Hakanpaa isn't a free agent but a trade acquisition

So what would you want in return?

What I’m saying is it doesn’t make sense for us to trade him. If I said a second round pick everybody would tell me I’m dumb. But in reality that’s what it would take for it to make sense right now. He’s a solid, quality guy on a team friendly deal. He plays a position that we have literally no depth at. Just makes more sense to keep him. If we’re out of the playoffs in the last year of his deal then yeah absolutely grab a fourth or fifth for him

Makes sense, I mostly chose him because Sakic previously called about acquiring him in the past. But a solid 3ed RD is a need on Colorado

Except the Avs have Newhook to slide into place for Kadri and nobody really ready to replace Burakovsky. I agree Kadri is more important but somebody is going to go to stupidville with the money imo to get him.

Is Newhook ready? Haven't watched as many Avs games this year.

For sure. He would be a good fit. Hopefully Nill holds onto him
