that is way way too much for Giroux getting retained.
1st and Barron sure, pay a smaller asset for the other retained, a 4th was the price last year for that. But a 1st 2nd 3rd and barron can get someone that is more than a rental

Wings only keep a 3rd in this scenario.

i am fully aware of that, and a 3rd is more than what was established last season for 3rd team retention.
My point is this is a massive OP for a rental

Personally I'd stay away from Giroux he's going to Ottawa at the end of the season. With established prices just because one team is a ***** doesn't mean we all have to be whores.

I agree, I dont think it would be worth it, philly is going to be desperate for a team to over pay to help them out of their downward spiral.
Rather take a run at more reasonable targets without. Giroux would look good on their roster but I dont think hes woth the trade headache to make

Based on what comp? Detroit retained ~1M on Savard for a 4th and here ~2M so that’s actually right on par.

and the leafs retained 50% of Lehner's salary, which was 2.5m retention for a 5th round pick when he went through TO to go from Chicago to Vegas.
I dont think its right on par at all

The trade you are referring was from 2020, Savard is from 2021, so his point is more valid than not. In a year the value in retention changed. 3rd is likely correct

Close, they retained 1.1M technically 44% of the already 50% retention by Chicago. So this is another comp that is right inline with the Savard trade retention.

Yeah so i think 50% of Giroux for a 3rd seems very fair

You’re not taking into consideration salary, that is what matters most to the team acting as a 3rd party broker. Savard had a salary of 4m, giroux has a salary of 4m,. That team is paying real dollars to retain a contract. The cap number isn’t as important to that team l, the salary real dollars id

Both teams operate extremely profitable even through Covid. We’re not talking about Arizona/Ottawa. You could factor in the cost of only having 2 retention slots (Panik) for Detroit so they’d essentially only be able to retain one additional which they won’t do for a mid-late pick.

That is not what I’m saying, the real set value in the draft pick is due to the amount of salary retained, not necessarily the cap
Amount

If savard retained the exact same amount of real money for a 4th, how does giroux who would have the same real money being retained not be the same.

Because you’re are implying there’s no difference in value between retaining 50% of the two following.

Player A - 5M AAV & 4M salary
Player B - 10M AAV & 4M salary

Salary isn’t the sole consideration in compensation. A team may only have 3 retained spots and Detroit is already using 1 leaving then only 1 available if this deal would go through. Second, an owner’s appetite for acquiring these deals varies (eg NYR/Toronto versus Ottawa). Lastly, we’re talking prorated so in Savard’s trade it was roughly 175k not exactly killing some of these owners (hell some AHL lifers make more). My point being this value isn’t a linear trend with only one variable.
