I'd do that from the Oilers end for sure. Doubt either of those guys would want to come to Edmonton though unfortunately.

Oilers accept, just have to clear a bit more cap but wouldn't be that hard

Salary cap is not the only issue, asset management becomes a pretty big problem if the Oilers have both Varlamov and Smith under contract next season. By then, Skinner is no longer waiver exempt.

Definitely a consideration... but if you don't add another goalie you're also running the risk of having Skinner as your starter because 41 year old Smith is on IR 3/4 of the year.

The Oilers are trying to get a starting goalie whether that happens this year or in the offseason. So regardless they will have to address the situation with who ever they bring in, Smith and Skinner. So with that in mind, this trade is good for the Oilers right now.

Varlamov could be for Edmonton what Mike Smith was/is supposed to be, but not with both of them under contract. I think, unless a great deal falls in his lap, Ken Holland is going to hold off until Smith returns and gets a few games in. IMO, he is likely to pursue a guy like Jaroslav Halak this season, if he feels he needs to shore up his goaltending before the TDL. As with last summer, Varlamov could be a solid off-season acquisition for Edmonton, but only if he approves the trade and the Oilers can figure out how to avoid losing Skinner to a waiver claim next year.
