No, it doesn't give Leafs cap space. Gee, the Leafs (or almost any team)_want don't Petry and his contract.

Shouldnt those first round picks be coming from Montreal to take Shea Weber? That is extremely laughable offer

Canes don’t need Chiarot. We can use those assets elsewhere. At best Chiarot is a healthy scratch, and with how Smith has been playing as of late, he doesn’t get consideration for the roster anytime soon.

Explain to me thought how a player that teams are ready to pay a 1st round pick and a propect for would be Healthy scratch on a team that has Ian Cole and Brendan Smith playing for them in defense. As by your comment I can clearly see that you underestimate Chiarot by a lot. He's been the Habs' best defensman this season and would be a solid top 4 defensman on your team. You'd be acquiring him in a trade that is perfecly fair for you considering the position you are in right as you already got a bright futur in a team that is already stunning and your low 1st round draft pick this year. Letting Ponomarev go won't really hurt you.

It actually adds over 10,000,000 but webers goes on LTIR which means it adds about 4.2 mil no chance Toronto figures out a way to add that much salary nor should they for a guy who
A) Is declining
B) wants no part of being in Canada now
C )would still be an over 4 mil hit on the cap.

No at all. By getting Shea Weber, you're getting an player that is on LTIR that overall will allow you to take Petry while being over the cap and still have around 3 more millions to work with to add anything you want. So after a bit of math it's an amazing trade for both team. You get Petry who was in contention for the Norris last year for 4 million for maybe 1-2 cup run and additional cap space for 5 years.

Rod would be riding his hot players, and Cole and Smith have been playing really well as of late. Plus, Bear is also getting back to being fully healthy. There just isnt a spot on the roster for him. Chiarot wont be replacing anybody in our top 4, and just getting past Cole and Smith would be hard to do. We arent even talking about any of the Canes depth defenseman just waiting for their chance to come up from the AHL. The game is asset management, and spending a 1st and a high end prospect on Chiarot for him to very likely end up as a healthy scratch is just terrible asset management. If another team is willing to do that, let them deal with the consequences, but it wont be the Canes.

Yes, losing Ponomarev wouldnt hurt the canes that much now, maybe some in the long term, but not right now. But if the Canes were to include Ponomarev in a package for someone who could slide into our top 6, particularly at LW, it would be much better asset management. Plus, the likelihood that the Canes and Habs would trade any time soon is very low, what with the turmoil of the offer sheet and all.

MTL wanting a first for Chiarot is different than teams lining up to give that up for him lol. Huge difference.

If Canes are giving up their first (very unlikely to do so since they already don’t have next years and that’s not their historical philosophy) it would be for a more impactful player. Not somebody who’s having a pretty bad season (all be it on a terrible team which likely is weighing him down but still, performance and value are what they are this year) and would likely be battling for third pair. More likely to go after Chych, Kling or somebody like Braun imo. Also think they’d be more likely to spend high assets on another top 6 winger if they were choosing between bolstering scoring versus defense.

Youre only accruing his LTIR cap space from the day of the trade, which equates to nothing since the idea is to accrue the capspace all season to make room at the deadline..... then if weber decides to retire (and im not totally up to speed on this part) but Toronto AND Nashville get hit with cap penalties. So youre not going to pay 2 first round picks for a guy who isnt going to play on your team. Petry good in the past has not been good this season and would not garner one of the Leafs better prospects. This is an easy decline
