Exploring a Meier trade

Created by: Bias_it_self
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2022
Published: Feb. 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rangers struggle to score consistently 5v5 and Meier could really change that. He’s one of the leading scorers 5v5. With 2 mil retained and taking on Nemeth, Rangers can resign Strome.

Middleton has been really solid this season and is still an RFA. He’ll be cheap to resign and would be a rock on that bottom pairing with Schneider.

(LTR are players who should be moved in the event of a Meier trade)

rangers would prob only do this in the off-season after assessing their cap situation. that being said, sharks would be fools to move meier and would be getting destroyed in this trade

In a hard rebuild, moving Meier would be smart. He has the most value on the team and, say at the end of a 3 year rebuild, he’ll be 29 and slowly transitioning out of his prime.

I don’t like this move for San Jose. Don’t need Garland, they just drafted Gaudreau ahead of Garland. Nemeth is a cap dump. Late 1st, late 2nd. Kakko I’m sure they still hold in high regards but he has really underperformed and Lundqvist is their 3rd best D prospect.

I’d rebuttal with:

Schneider
Kakko
22 1st
22 2nd
Chytil
Nemeth

Meier would exact a premium of a 40 goal scorer on the market. Ranger Rejects, cap dumps and busts dont fill the fill

If Hertl would go for it, I was thinking of this concept as the best possible scenario for the Sharks. Re-sign Hertl. Trade Meier for something like Kakko, Schneider and a first. If Rangers need a cap dump to make it work, they can trade w/ someone else to make that happen. I don't think there's a way for the Sharks to keep Hertl + Meier with all of the other terrible contracts they have. It is very possible the Sharks have to pay Jones, Kane and Vlasic, 7M to not play for the Sharks next year.

I'm sure San Jose could get a boat load for Timo, but I can't see them trading him. I'm not saying that's the smart move, but the Sharks don't always do what is smart, such as let Pavelski walk and trade for and give Karlsson a crazy contract. I think they will re-sign Hertl and not choose a full rebuild.

No interest in this trade. Honestly have no interest in anyone in the league. Rangers aren’t good enough to win a damn thing this year regardless if trades they make. They need to just use this year to gain experience in the playoffs and let the young guys continue to develop.

That’s what I think they should do, but ownership has put pressure on to compete.

Yeah, unfortunately this mindset will be the very thing that prevents them winning another cup.
