Dallas Buying and Selling at the Deadline

Created by: kdawg32086
Team: 2021-22 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2022
Published: Feb. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the way they have been playing, Dallas feels it's a playoff team and that they might even be able to catch Nashville or St. Louis (or both). They add a veteran winger at the deadline and make opportunistic trades to give themselves more cap space this summer to re-sign the core of this team.
Trades
1.
DAL
  1. Imama, Bokondji
Additional Details:
Dallas dumps Dobby's contract, giving themselves more cap flexibility at the deadline and in the summer.
ARI
  1. Khudobin, Anton
  2. Kiviranta, Joel
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Coyotes pick up a young winger and a draft pick in exchange for taking the final year of Khudobin's contract. All of their goalies are free agents this summer, so this isn't a huge deal.
2.
DAL
  1. Järnkrok, Calle
Additional Details:
Dallas picks up a veteran winger for its playoff push.
SEA
  1. Sekera, Andrej
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Seattle picks up a draft pick in return for Jarnkrok, who likely leaves as a free agent this summer. Sekera is an expiring contract.
3.
DAL
  1. Koskinen, Mikko
  2. Samorukov, Dmitri
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
With the way Oettinger has been playing, Holtby is expendable. Dallas moves him, as he'll likely be too expensive to re-sign. They take Koskinen's contract for the rest of the season, but pick up a prospect and a draft pick.
EDM
  1. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
Edmonton lands the starting goalie it has been looking for.

These all seem pretty reasonable for all teams involved.

Kiviranta and 3rd isn't enough to take on Khudobin. Pick either has to be 2nd or the player has to be higher upside player like Dellandrea or Martino. The idea isn't bad but the value is slightly off

Would DAL take Smith instead of Koskinen? Smith would be your back up next year and easier for EDM to re-sign Holtby to an extension.

Again this is all hypothetical. I don't see Holland trade but I personally would rather trade Smith than Koskinen for cap flexibility.

I don't think Dallas can take on that contract and have enough cap space (it's already tight with the Khudobin and Suter contracts) to re-sign everyone and still have a competitive team around them. Would likely require a better pick and/or prospect.

Yeah Dobby isn’t going to cost that much to dump, if so there’s a lot of other teams to dump him to. They won’t all be unreasonable. He’s a struggling goalie getting paid 3.3 million for another year, NJ doesn’t have any healthy goalies that are as good as Dobby so I’m pretty sure they’d take him for a 3rd.

A perfect example of demanding too much would be Francis with Seattle, he didn’t get any cap dumps because he demanded too much value to take them. Look how Seattle are doing compared to Vegas, Vegas took some for realistic amounts and profited a lot more than Seattle.

Maybe Buffalo too since they're rebuilding and their goalies are all FA's too.
