Habs trade for OEL+, what would it take?

Created by: F50marco

Description
And lets try to be reasonable here. I know everyone is going to list out every first round pick for the next 10 years and every 1st round prospect the Habs have and then throw in Price, Pacioretty and Weber, but be realistic and not just try to be negative for nothing.

Maybe you'd be willing to offer more or you think another team would be better suited but lets just imagine a world where Chayka was actively looking at Montreal with this trade and he and Bergevin were committed to hashing out an even deal where no one feels like they're getting screwed.

What would be the components to this deal that could be worked? Every single player on the Habs is available. Yes including Sergachev obviously.

So if I had to break down a quick offer tht could be expanded on, I'd think something like this:

    1) Galchenyuk
    2) Sergachev
    3) 1st round pick 2017
    4) ???
    5) ???
    etc

No joke, here's what it might take to get Oliver Ekman-Larsson:

    Montreal Canadiens
    Oliver Ekman-Larsson

    Arizona Coyotes
    2017 1st Round Pick
    Mikhail Sergachev
    Nikita Scherbak
2nd round pick (not sure what year)
    Noah Juulsen

That's just my opinion though. Many would disagree with me, but in my opinion Ekman-Larsson is actually a REALLY good defenseman. Not saying i think Montreal should do that, i'm just saying it's what it might take.

You wouldn't get Strome and Duclair as well, but for OEL, I would think the below is a starting point.

    Galchenyuk
    Sergachev

do you see any other teams offering as much for a short term fix for OEL. Galchenyuk and Sergachev would cause two holes in the Habs lineup.

Galchenyuk, Sergachev, Danault, Baulieu, Scherback, Chris Terry, Juulsen , 1st rnd pick, 2nd pick for OEL, Strome, Duclair. I'd do it. I'd also try to sign Thornton and Marleau in the offseason for a reasonable cap hit. Also try to get Duchene in the offseason. I'll send Duclair Davidson Byron

Hmm fair enough. I think OEL having only 2 years left on his contract before becoming a UFA isn't being taken into consideration enough in some of these offers. I don't think anyone doubts how good OEL is but the fact that there isn't a precedent for a trade like this makes it hard to gauge. I mean some of the closest comparables in terms of tardes are the Dougie Hamilton trade and the Chris Pronger trade to Philly.....

If OEL, Strome and Duclair is worth whatever your thinking, what is Pacioretty, Sergachev and Lehkonen worth? (Not saying they are worth more but they would be in the ball park too)

Offer sheeting the highest offer you can give an RFA stud player, would yield less than that. That is four 1st rounders and 2nd rounder with one being a true top prospect that could be a OEL in the near future himself. I got to believe that if any trade involves four 1st rounders+, the player coming back has to be an absolute stud as well as signed long term to a decently cap friendly deal. If OEL had 5 years @ 5.5M, i think it would be easier to swallow.

Well the question was for all of them together. In terms of looking at value proportionately, given that OEL is not signed long term, I can't see Galchenyuk, Sergachev and a 1st being viable. Think about what MTL is giving up here also. Galchenyuk on any other team other than the MTL (only players who can play defensive hockey are worthy) Canadiens could be a #1/2 line center or at best top line winger. Sergachev is projected as the likes of Thomas Chabot, Charlie McCavoy, etc. and the 1st round pick this year will be between 20-30 depending on where the Habs finish. That is Montreal's future right there because Juulsen, McCarron, Scherbak, etc are nice but they are not top end studs like Galchenyuk and Sergachev are.

I agree. The kicker is that we could potentially resign OEL as soon as possible to shore up the top pairing for a the next 4-5 years. Strome hasn't been able to crack the Coyotes lineup but maybe if given a sheltered role on a good team could help him get to know the game better and then his talents can be unleashed. Duclair is being played less than 12 mins a game and being sent the minors on a regular basis. Even Chayka knows what he is doing is making that flash in the pan 20 goal season from Duclair seem less enticing than previously thought.

Ah no thanks.[/quote] yup i have to admit i over payed. Id have to take Danault, Juulsen the 2nd rounder out. But i have to admit, I prefer to be patient and keep Sergachev. But I'd definitely give up Galchenyuk and something else to sweeten the deal for Strome. Galchenyuk is an idiot IMO, he needs a change of scenery. Another prospect that MTL failed to develop. I don't care how old Jagr is, bring him here for a couple of years to show these kids what dedication and work ethic is.
