Savard returned a 1st and Mayfield is significantly better than him.

That doesn't matter, Mayfield isn't a rental+ he's on a team friendly deal. Klingberg is the only RD available who is better than Mayfield.

Leafs decline, thats too steep for Mayfield. Toronto has their 3rd pair guy, they need a bonafide top 4 RHD now

Every trade I've seen with Clutterbuck going out has full retention, wondering if OP forgot to include. Clutterbuck with 50% retention comes down to a $1.75M hit, which I think works for a 3rd considering his play.

maybe im biased but I could really see Clutterbuck's return being more than we expect. Almost every contender should be on him and the isles can easily retain 50%. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if he got something as high as a 2nd

It does matter though. There are only so many teams willing to give up 1sts and they'll get eaten up by the other guys real fast

He's a grinder with tons of playoff experience, which we know is catnip to GMs around the deadline. I'm anticipating a 3rd but like you said, would not be shocked if some team came knocking with a 2nd on full retention.

The teams looking at a guy like Klingberg aren't going to be looking for a guy like Mayfield, and vice versa. Mayfield has a market as a guy who plays a very similar game to Josh Manson, doesn't have a no-trade list like Manson, and costs less salary than Manson. Manson is probably the guy who gets/beats the Savard package (1st/3rd/4th for retention), which means that whoever wanted Manson and missed out on that deal can pivot to Mayfield and pay less (just a 1st). If, as you say, there aren't enough 1sts to go around, the Islanders should have no problem paying $1.45M for an RD who has shown he can keep his head above water in top 4 minutes.

The point that Islanders fans have been making on this board is that Mayfield is *not* a guy that the team needs to trade, and that if anyone wants him and his attractive cap hit, they're going to overpay. We don't necessarily want the 1st rounder over him, but if we're moving him, we want that value. If there's no extra 1sts to go around to get him, then so be it.

I'd send the third for full retention CC, but I get why Isles fans hope for more.
