If you're willing to accept cap dumps, why not go just a little further? I bet TOR will give you a 1st to take Mrazek off their hands.

Carolina isn't paying to dump Gardiner. He's on LTIR and isn't returning this year. If you want him, you can have him. But you're not getting a pick with him. Think of him like the Johnny Boychuk contract

Technically, CAR should want to give something to get rid of his contract. I don't think it'll be a 2nd round pick, but there are some other benefits to getting rid of Gardiner. Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas have performance bonuses. It's not a lot, BUT I don't think their bonuses are difficult to achieve. I'm trying to double check what they are (if you could help me that would be great...I thought they were games played bonuses vs the harder to achieve bonuses), BUT long story long...CAR has zero cap space and whatever bonuses get paid to Jarvis/Necas will actually count towards NEXT year's cap hit, thus reducing the cap ceiling CAR will have. Sure the max is $1M, but is $1M in cap worth a 5th? worth a 4th? I'd probably say yes to the 4th.

Gardiner only counts towards the cap by about 500k. They actually have more room WITH him than without him.

That's not how it works. Copy and Paste the capfriendly link. You'll see that CAR has a projected cap space of $0. That's because Gardiner is LTIR and not coming back. What you're getting confused with is the LTIR remaining which is only during the season. When the playoffs start the cap goes away, BUT CAR will have used 100% of their cap. Look further down the CAR team page and you'll see a term "CARRYOVER BONUS OVERAGES" Hover over the question mark and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I know how it works. There's still no reason to move Gardiner because you're not getting the point.

In a year Carolina want to win the cup, why would you not give yourself the maximum room to make moves? Who cares if 200k worth of bonuses carry over. Hallelujah! Who gives a sh*t? You have more space for moves THIS year when you're a cup contender.

Hawks aren't going to need to dump cap when we're not going to be contending.

Hawks accept, if you want Johnson for an extra pick we can do that too

Oh the Hawks should accept. It's just a 3rd and I think Kaner would like to use that cap space to at least attempt to contend.

Well congratulations on changing the topic entirely. If you want to solve both the longer term and the shorter term for the playoffs you could adjust the trade above is many different ways. I was just pointing out the bonus aspects of it. Maybe you include Bear? Maybe Nino and get other pieces back? Thousands of ways to adjust a trade for the playoffs. I was just discussing that it would be nice to NOT lose $1M in cap next year.

Why? Carolina are going to lose one of Trocheck or Niederreiter this summer, and that's known, meaning they'll have space to use. Why would you not push it off a year? Who cares about 500k on the books next year (if they even achieve their bonuses because they're both ice cold) Why fuss over something so small?

It would just prolong our rebuilding process, we're not in a position to contend, especially with our center depth. Best thing I think we could do for Kane is to trade him at the deadline, we could get back quite a bit for him.
