I was trying to push both cap hits to the extreme to see how much space was left over.

Thats fair, I just think a good, young second pair RHD is worth much much more to us than Garland. I like Garland, but we pretty much need Marino, as much as I also like Goligoski, mostly cause we're both named Alex. Pens wanna keep their young NHL guys, except maybe Kap. So while I like Garland and what he could bring they can't move Marino rn. They also have so many middle 6 wingers about to break into the NHL that have top 6 potential btween Poulin, Legare, Puuts, Hallander, Nylander.

I think you make strong points. Pens would have to have a good RHD locked up in FA to make the Garland trade with Marino.

To me, having a dynamic 2nd line offers more than what the 2nd pairing defense is providing the Pens. If this was 4-5 years ago, you would never consider trading a young Marino who is locked up. The Pens have 3-4 years max window. Load up the top 6, hope those ELC middle 6 forwards develop for your 3rd line and go for it.

Regardless of what we think, I have a feeling GMRH will make some moves this off-season.

Of course they do. That's a terrible trade for the Pens. This whole AGM makes the Pens really bad defensively.

I think the Pens defensive players are a bit overrated. It’s a team concept and structure that make then good defensively. I think Petts is very replaceable and so is Marino.

Obviously Matheson is who I would want to trade but that’s not happening.

What do you think of Pens keeping Petts and not signing Rakell?
Replacing Marino with Goligoski. Is the team defense ok then? With the addition of a top 6 F.

Getting rid of Pettersson is a much more replaceable action than Marino. Getting rid of Both hurts bad. POJ/Marino could be successful.

Gogo has been fine, but he's not nearly as good defensively as Marino and he's old. Paying him more money than Marino is poor asset management.

I agree with you. I just think the Pens need to get another legit top 6F for next year. Most, if not all, of the FA will be priced out for the Pens.

Therefore, to me the asset management is a wash because the pens would pay more for Gogo, but would get a top 6 F for much less than a FA

There are better ways to make that happen than giving up Marino.

Yea I just think they wanna make sure the team is still decent for a while cause a full on rebuild will hurt ticket sales so much. That's why their first is off the board. They need to find a good winger for this year who doesn't cost as much and can be resigned beyond this year. I agree Petterson will be moved, and probably zucker too. POJ and Marino will pair up and they'll hopefully look for someone to matchup with Maths. Personally I like guys who can be had for not a ton more than Kap himself, ie Rakell, Olofsson, Gurianov, ect. Then I'd like a guy like Mayo from Ari or a similarly 24-26 y/o bigger stay at home dman to pair with Maths. Then I'm all for Namestnikov for a 3rd cause he'll play on any line and be effective. Mayo has term and is solid, give them a 2 and theyll add a low end prospect like Raty. Olofsson and gurianov are RFAs and don't have huge qualifying offers, Rakell is a UFA but shouldn't cost a ton to retain. Thats my ideal deadline cause those guys can be retained and then in the offseason you move Petterson and Zucker to have more cap. That way you can bring in another guy or 2 and have all the young guys right there

You've created a top-heavy team with below average defense.

With all that space I would sign Palat over Rackel. Palat will probably cost around $5.5Mish.

Any legit top 6F and I will be happy. I just kept as is because who knows how much the cap will go up and what Malkin signs for.

Or we trade McGinn, bring up a WBS for the 4th and add Palat. Lol that would clearly be ideal.

I definitely would hold McGinn. You don't want to sacrifice bottom six depth. If some WBS players show they're ready then you can make moves.

Yeah after looking I’d probably move Heinen’s rights and sign Palat if able.

Also don’t want to trade a player 1 year into a 4 year deal that played well for the role he was signed for. Could hurt future negotiations with FAs.
