I’m all for going for Boeser, but I feel like that’s a bit too much to give up

Only happening if Marino is involved

I would 100% do this trade. Our first will be late in the round and will unlikely be as impactful as a player like Boeser.

So then why do the canucks do this trade?

you're not getting Marino and you don't get to decide that.
Honestly, I agree with comments above. This is an over pay.
Truth is his $7,500,000 QO for a guy looking at only 25 goals isn't impressing me.
While VAN fans can be all up in arms about that, they wouldn't be looking at moving him if it was.
I'd wait till the offseason. You might be able to get him as a UFA. Because I sure as hell wouldn't qualify that contract if I was a GM. You got to play moneypuck in the modern game.

You don’t get to decide that Marino doesn’t get traded. That’s the only way the Penguins get Boeser.

no it's clearly not the "ONLY" way.
As a matter of fact, there is NO WAY the penguins would trade Marino. Period. It's not even a discussion.
You know why? Because unlike Boeser he doesn't have a garbage contract. He's actual a great value player.
Maybe get over it a bit. Realize your player isn't worth the contract he's going to ask for, and that other teams aren't playing that game.

So what is a young, top 6 winger who plays at a 65+ point pace worth to you? He is likely to sign for less than his QO on a long term deal and wants to stay, so there’s no reason for the Canucks to trade him unless it’s good value. Realize that in order to acquire good players in a trade you have to give up assets worthy of said player

I don't know why people on here keep with these ideas of "likely to sign for less than his QO"
Because I'll call BS on that right now.
Name me one player who's done that.
DeBrusk has stated that because he want's out of BOS that bad and doesn't want his QO to get in the way. Even he knows that's holding teams back and he's not going to get that in FA.
But if BOS kept him, he'd demand it to hit the market.
The same is true with Boeser, he will demand his QO. You can count on that. So there is a reason for them to have him on the market, and frankly that is it.
No matter how you flip it, he's not worth 7.5
So you can keep on with that if you want, but that's not even remotely reasonable.
You are more than free to resign him at that rate. If you want. Make that bet. But most other teams are probably looking in the 5-6 range on him.
Furthermore, your insistence that it "has to be Marino" is just insane from the start. Teams, especially ones who are in the playoffs, aren't moving their top 4 Defense. How hard is that to realize?
Teams looking to ADD to win, aren't moving the pieces that have helped them WIN already.
That's why it's called ADDING.
You are more likely to get a hockey trade with maybe a pick or prospect. So a player they want to move out or swap for whatever reason. Like the PLD Laine trade last year.

I’m ok with trading our first being considered, but not if it’s for a minor upgrade at RW with a terrible contract, a massive downgrade at backup goalie, and trading away 6 valuable assets.

Minor upgrade? Have you seen Kapanen play? He’s done here.

Have you seen Boeser play? It’s not been much better. Boeser has 30 points in 49 games and has a 7.5 million QO. Kapanen has 25 points in 54 games and has an 840k QO. One player wants a 6+ million contract, I’d rather take the guy that will get less than 4 for a few less points.

Their advanced stats are pretty similar too.
