Improving without Giving up a First

Description
Getting Varly without a first might be tough, but if we can pull it off, I think it's a huge pickup. In the summer, trade one of Sammy/Vitek.

You *might* be able to get him without giving a 1st but you're giving up a 1st if you want to dump Kempny at the same time.

Kempny doesn't really matter too much in this trade. We can bury him and his cap hit will still fit with prorated salaries and whatnot. Trotz loves him still, the thought process is that he might go for the risk free reclamation project.

seems like they might make a some moves like this. GMBM said that wont be aggressive at the deadline.. i think they should just punt or trade some assets to desperate teams at the deadline

Agreed. I'd have no issues with trading someone like Eller or Sheary at the deadline, given McMichael and Snively look like they can play those roles. Getting some of those picks back would be nice. I honestly think combining those moves w what's on this AGM would make a ton of sense.

Not really worried about Kempny in the trade as he is UFA at years end and walks. But the Isles would not retain $2.5M on Varly next year without a 1st coming back. Keeping that money on the books, and signing a UFA backup which would be around $2.5M would put the Isles back at $5M for a backup goaltender. They could just keep Varly then.

Maybe with no retention on Varly it's considered but as it is, this is definitely not it.

What about Cogliano, to fill in for Hagelin, for a late pick? He's on an expiring contract & is a good PKer.
