Why trade Mikko and not Smith? Pretty sure NYI would take Smith back... no idea why Edmonton would include Turris or Archibald in the deal as they cost basically nothing.

Isles are giving up a starting-caliber goalie, and a guy who can play top 4 minutes on the right side, both with an extra year of term (with Mayfield being a deal at $1.45M), and they get back a guy who's out with a heart issue, a guy who's scored a single goal in 27 games this year, one of your B prospects, a cap dump, this year's 1st, and next year's 3rd.

Neither player *needs* to be moved (Isles have about $2.7M In cap right now and clear another $7+M on July 1st, with only one RFA of note in Noah Dobson.) If they want to trade them both, they can probably get back a 1st for Varlamov and *at least* a 2nd and a B prospect for Mayfield. None of that is here, so Islanders easily pass.

I’d spend a third on Braun just to sit on the bench act as insurance. The right d has no internal depth and do need an option to turn to that isn’t lagesson or moving Niemelianen over as good as they have been playing the other side in a big game can be an issue. Ideally wouldn’t want to spend any better than a 4th but twist arm enough would do a third for the right guy.
