New look Jets

Created by: swinny
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 5, 2021
Published: Mar. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Blueline gets a remake. Kulak is a very under rated addition, who should pair nicely with Poink. Allows for the development of Samberg and Heinola, thinking one of them should pair with Poink at some point. Critique is they lack a legit shut down pair, but, have to develop the kids. Transition game should be dangerous.

3rd line completely remade - Drury has a two way game, Tippett we will see, and Mikeyev adds some offensive teeth.

  1. Tippett, Owen [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
2021-22 deadline

Tippett has not panned out in FLA, but statistically looks to be a solid 3rd liner at this point with upside. Could the Jets get more for Dillon? Debatable.

Jets have the blueline depth to shed the salary and start rounding out a new look 3rd line - which imo, is needed.
FLA
  1. Dillon, Brenden
Additional Details:
Panthers are all in, need anither D and have a hoard of forward depth to pull it off.

Dillon is a solid stya-at-home D who can play anywhere in the Panthers lineup.
2.
WPG
  1. Drury, Jack
Additional Details:
2021-22 deadline

Drury is about as NHL ready as they might come, which may lead some Canes fans not to like this, but you pay to play. Also, an still very deep at forward, so a move that isn't entirely detrimental to the organization if it means a Cup.

Drury's two way game should fit nicely into the Jets 3rd line next year, and has the upside to move up the line up.

Jets fans may want a pick here, but given where I see Drury, this is a straight up deal.
CAR
    Andrew Copp with retention

Canes are all in this year, and I have to believe they will be looking to add scoring punch, which Copp can provide. Something about a 2nd line of Copp-Trochek- Svech/Necas that sounds awefully good.

      2021-22 Deadline

      Paul Stastny

The Rangers have a team that could donsome playoff damage, but if they are going to do that, need some parts. Picking up Stastny to replace Chytil on the 3rd line gives that line some offensive teeth..... or play 2C moving Strome to the wing, or shift some wingers around.

Gives Rangers options at a fairly low cost point.

      1. 2023 3rd round pick (NJD)
      NJD
      1. DeMelo, Dylan
      Additional Details:
Devils should be looking for a bottom pairing RD. DeMelo can play a shut down roll, and give the Devils blueline some options.

Copp would be a pure rental, and the Canes have historically not made moves for pure rentals. While Drury is the Canes most NHL ready C prospect, we aren’t giving him up for Copp. I have said this about Forsberg as well. Drury is almost guaranteed a full time roster spot next year, so why would the Canes trade him for someone they wouldn’t even be able to resign? Suzuki/Rees/Ponomarev and a pick would be fair, but asking for Drury would be a reach for a Copp return. Canes pass.

Winnipeg says no on the Florida and Jersey deals, but yes on the other 2.

      It's fair feedback.

I see a possibility of Copp resigning in Carolina.

Given what Manson fetched Anaheim, I am not sure Drury isn't that far off base, but, as I said in my explanation, I could also see where the Canes would not want to give him up.

Historically, the Canes have gone after blueline depth at the deadline, I think this year bucks a trend. I see them trying for a forward. They have a team that can win. I see them going for it, the question becomes the cost.

There is going to be change on the blueline in Winnipeg. I don't see them sending Heinola and Samberg back to the Moose.

I see 2 gone. We can debate the return, but 2 are gone imo

That is quite possible, but until we see where everything lands in the off season, there is no reason to give away good players for poor returns.

Contrary to popular belief making bad trades for poor value doesn't improve the team.

      FLA trade:
No. too much for Tippett. Maybe Stanley or Harkins (+)

      CAR trade:
I get the idea and all, but for me it’d be a no. We don’t need C and wasting our assets on what we don’t need is just a continuation of what got us in this mess.
RHW, RHD, and/or Picks should be our only targets

      NYR trade:
      Seems right value wise

      NJD trade:
No.Leaves a hole on our RD and we’re already weak there. Plus we could possibly get more

Carolina likely doesn't do that anyway but how do the Jets not need a good center prospect?

-Scheifele's future is unknown and is 29 with only two more years left on his contract
-Perfetti might be a winger at the NHL level, future is unknown
      -Dubois needs a new contract
      -Lowry's a glorified 4C
-Gustafsson has little experience and looks like a two-way 3C at best so far
-Nathan Smith isn't signed yet and has yet to play a game of pro hockey so his potential is unknown
-Stastny and Copp are both UFA'S and the team is capped out to try and resign them if they want to stay north of the border which seems unlikely especially with Stastny
-Any other centers they have are 4C types like Toninato or a guy like Harkins who hasn't played much center in the NHL
-Other drafted center prospects haven't been signed to NHL contracts like Lucious or Nikkanen, they're not helping anytime soon

That list to me says they could use centers.

We drafted Perfetti to be a C before we traded for Dubios and we don’t play him there. Why bring in more Avs just to play them at wing?
Perfetti, Gus, Smith, all centers with no NHL play time in the role except Gus and that’s only if there’s an injury.
We also have Lucius in the pipes.
Now how many RW and RD do we have in the pipeline to fill in for I jury order replace aging and declining vets?

      Jets don’t need C.
Trading for one is a waste of assets when we should be addressing the issues we have

You just said the same thing about the risk involved with the centers we have.. lol

Not many RW but wingers play on their offhand all the time so who cares, they have Kovacevic, Gawanke and Lundmark as RHD.

So let's say you want that RD. Do the Jets really move Heinola and/or Samberg? If you don't embrace playing one or both these guys of the opposite side, trade them. But wait. That is equally a waste of assets.

Point I will make and stand by acquiring a young C is simple: Jets a deep on the blueline. Schmidt (whonI kept in this scenario) has been playing his offside all year, and looks good doing it. Poink is your second d pairing "natural" RD.

If anyone out there thinks Samberg or Heinola won't be an upgrade on DeMelo long term, speak.

Now, I can appreciate the feedback that the Canes won't move Drury (perhaps correct), but long-term having centre depth wins Cups, perhaps more than a great blueline.... after all, Jets never got it done with Buff, Myers and Trouba in the lineup.

Break an egg folks, you can make an omlette.

Oh I'm all for acquiring another center if thats the best offer for Copp(if they trade Copp which they absolutely should).

As for Samberg and Heinola playing their offhand, sure if they can.

If either should be traded is up for debate but I'd for sure trade Heinola if the return filled a need, the Jets defense is already too small, I don't see how adding Heinola to a bunch of other smallish dmen is going to help and I actually like Heinola more then Samberg.

Another thing to consider that I think my fellow Jets fans here overlook is theres a chance they snag a RHD in the 1st round of the draft so acquiring one in say a Copp trade might end up being not that big of an issue.

Schmidt has been decent but I'd prefer to trade him then Dillon though I'm sure Dillon has more value and would actually be wanted by other teams. Idk wtf Chevy was thinking acquiring both of them and now I think he's stuck with Schmidt and his big cap hit with a lot of term.

There aren't many big D on the market, and that is an issue. I was one that felt keeping Chariot should have been a priority, and oddly, maybe the right guy to grab.

If Chevy is smart, he maybe eyeing up LA in the offseason. With the emergence of Durzi, I suspect Walker could be had. That depends on the price point. Heinola for Walker just maybe a place to go, but I would be reluctant.

What I did here was really usher in what is a good young crop. Changing that up may still be in the cards. It is CF, and regardless of what is presented, haters hate.

Story I heard was Chevy didn't want to go three years with Chiarot and Bergevin would so he signed there, if true that was a huge miss by Chevy.

The guy I'd like to get from LA would be Grans.

Do think the Jets need to bring in some of their young dmen, they have many D prospects that look quite promising, they have quite a few more then just Samberg and Heinola.

      They do. Really like Gawanke.

But, as my post does, it is time to move in from the idea of Lowry centering the 3rd line. There is a need to add some offensive teeth to it..... this year it lacked badly. Big reason they're on the outside looking in.

Yes I like Gawanke too, really deserves a callup, they need to see what they have in some of these young guys.

Oh gawd ya don't have to tell me, I've been beating that drum for years.. lol.. Lowry has been a glorified 4th liner his entire career, I've never considered him to be a 3C, they just won't play him anywhere else uunfortunately. It doesn't matter who his linemates are either, he's played with lots of good players this season yet he still can't produce. I've been saying it for years and you're right, if this season they had some average offense coming from their 3rd line they're probably in a much better position right now.

I agree that Copp for Drury is intriguing and pretty fair value if Carolina can extend Copp. However, I think the canes organization is super high on Drury and expect him to step into the 3rd/4th line center spot next year after Trocheck leaves.
