Oilers Rumours and Wishful Thoughts

Created by: ConnorMcJesus_
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 16, 2022
Published: Mar. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
THIS WAS JUST FOR FUN I DONT CARE IF THE VALUE OR WHATEVER IS OFF BY A BIT.

EDM is the frontrunners for Kubalik.

Yes I know Varlamov is slim to none because of the NMC to EDM or whatever it is.

Oilers need a 2nd line LD, and that's where Soucy comes into play.
Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Kassian, Zack
  2. Tullio, Tyler
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Kassian is to even out the cap but that will cost them a big draft pick (hence the 2023 2nd) plus a prospect with lots of potential if developed right.
2.
EDM
  1. Soucy, Carson ($1,375,000 retained)
SEA
  1. Lagesson, William
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)
  3. 2023 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
PLEASE HOLLAND I BEG HE IS LITERALLY THE GUY WE NEED
3.
EDM
  1. 2024 5th round pick (NSH)
NSH
  1. Archibald, Josh
Additional Details:
Any american team
4.
EDM
  1. Varlamov, Semyon ($1,250,000 retained)
NYI
  1. Koekkoek, Slater
  2. Smith, Mike
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (EDM)
  4. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Varlamov is significantly better but the cap difference would really benefit the Islanders. Also they are getting a decent draft pick out of it. Smith could also be a good mentor for the young Russian Ilya Sorokin. *Trade is probably not happening BUT if it did it could look something like this.*

Varly won’t waive for EDM, and that wouldn’t get it done.

That 2nd is only enough to pay for Kassian, maybe. Gotta pay for kubalik too

Doesn't get you kubalik alone. Tullio and a 2nd is probably barley enough for the hawks to take Kassian. He's owned 5M this year

Crazy underpayment for Varlamov. First: Islanders are not in a cap situation any longer, and I'm not sure where people keep getting that from? They have guys on higher AAVs they'd like to move, sure, but without making a single move they have nearly $14M in cap space this summer, with Noah Dobson being the only player who needs a significant raise. Plenty of room to shop for the LD2 & scoring winger they want - if they go 2 for 2 there, then *maybe* they need to move someone. But nobody's on the chopping block yet.

Second - Varlamov was top 5 in Vezina voting last year, putting up a .929 SV%, 2.04 GAA, and led the league with 22.0 GSAA. This year, he was recovering from offseason surgery and missed the whole preseason and first month of the season. Even with that, he's got a .912 SV%, 2.85 GAA, and 2.1 GSAA - numbers that look better since December 1st (about 3 weeks after his season debut, or about the same amount of PT he would've had in a preseason) with a .921 SV% & 2.65 GAA, and numbers that overall are still better than both Mike Smith (.891, 3.57, -7.7) and Mikko Koskinen (.904, 3.04, -4.4). He's an obvious upgrade in goal for the Oilers, and is worth *at least* a prospect and a 2nd.

You've given Mike Smith - as mentioned, a subpar backup with another year at $2.2M, and a guy Edmonton needs to move for cap purposes; Slaeter Koekkoek, a 7th/8th D at best; and a 3rd & 5th two years from now. And, cherry on top, you're asking the Islanders to retain $1.2M this year and next - something I would say is worth a 3rd on its own.

So your package for Varlamov basically boils down to dumping Mike Smith, an AHL tweener, and a 5th rounder. Would you take that?

Not nearly enough for Varly. He also isn't waiting for Edmonton apparently
