My Top UFA Targets for COL

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2022
Published: Mar. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Prioritize Kuemper and Nichushkin signings before July 1st. Also sign Sturm (this isnt the top priority though). Probably let Kadri and Burakovsky walk (or trade their UFA rights for a late pick) - COL doesnt have the cap space to make them a competitive offer without ruining their depth. Im mostly going for good value signings here instead of aiming for the top UFAs (No Gaudreau, Giroux, Malkin, etc)

My UFA Targets:

Middle 6 Forwards: (Lots of really good value pickups here imo)
1. Ilya Mikheyev
2. Paul Stastny
3. Mason Marchment
4. Evan Rodrigues

Bottom 6 Forwards:
1. Michael Raffl
2. Vladislav Namestnikov
3. Zach Aston-Reese
4. Dominik Simon
5. Derek Stepan - 4C replacement for Sturm if he doesnt sign

Depth Forwards:
1. Austin Czarnik
2. Andrew Cogliano

Bottom 4 Defensemen: (Theres not a lot of options here that I like, especially on RD, which is kinda disappointing since Sakic just traded all of our RHD prospects so we have no internal solution. Im just making a long list of meh guys who can fill the last RD spot)
1. Ian Cole
2. Colin Miller
3. Josh Manson
4. PK Subban
5. Ilya Lyubushkin
6. Troy Stecher

Depth Defensemen:
1. Matt Irwin

If I had to choose 1 UFA for COL to get it would be Ilya Mikheyev. He fits the Avs speed and transition identity and also has decent size which Sakic seems to be prioritizing recently. He can play all situations and would be a perfect winger for Newhook imo. Heres his player card:

Very informative. Thanks!

I hope Josh Manson turns out really well for you. And for obvious reasons, I'm also hoping for a Stanley Cup final between the Avs and either the Bruins or Penguins.

In all honesty I havent been a big fan of him so far. Its only been 5 games though and im sure hes still adjusting to the new systems (hopefully will be fully adjusted by playoffs). Plus I think his playstyle is more suited to playoff hockey anyway so thats really when he will be judged imo - If he performs well then I think Sakic will extend him

Unless Compher is part of a trade for a better player, (like Z for Saad) I can't see Sakic moving on from him until the next TDL. IM would be nice but TML have plans for him. At this point, with Byram still a long term question mark, I'd prioritize D and Manson seems perfect for an affordable deal. He's already 30 and doesn't score that much, so he should be a manageable contract. Who knows, maybe the Avs get Chiarot instead? V similar player

You can think of Stastny or Mikheyev as the Compher replacement - both of them are better and can only be brought in my moving Compher (or equivalent cap hit) out. Same end result as if it was a trade

I see a lot of TOR AGM posts for next year not signing Mikheyev (or signing him super cheap)

Manson hasnt been very good so far imo. Maybe he needs more time to adjust to COL's systems but based on what Ive seen up until now I would rather go for someone else
