Heinola is undersized and his playstyle brings up the debate of how this d core should look. The top 4 are not physical ones and are mainly full of puck movers. These smaller guys struggle to move guys out of the goalie's view and lack that strength in the corners. If you think my position is dumb look at how the d core was set up in 2018, Trouba (210lbs), Buff (265lbs), Myers (230lbs), and Chiarot (225lbs). Compared that to the top 4 now, Morrisey (195 lbs), Dillon (225lbs), Pionk (190 lbs), and DeMelo (195 lbs). If I was the jets I would consider having players like Samberg and Kovacevic who are both younger 220 lbs guys in the top 4. I mean they are the moose's top pairing players right now. I just cant see smaller defencemen making up a winning core and I cant see Heinola getting a lot of Top 4 play when the top 4 is already a bunch of puck movers.
Yup, very accurate assessment.
I think they need to find an upgrade on DeMelo who's bigger and more mobile, who that is idk but it needs to happen, guys like Zub or Severson are who I'd target.
Second pair of Dillon/Pionk I'd keep the same, if Samberg looks like a legit 2nd pair guy then MAYBE a Dillon trade can be explored later in the season but depth is needed so if it isn't a good trade offer then Dillon is kept.
Make the 3rd pair Samberg-Schmidt and keep Stanley as the #7 dman. I think they're stuck with Schmidt due to cap hit and term remaining.
DeMelo and Heinola are trade chips to fill other holes in the lineup, hopefully guys like Kovacevic and Gawanke make it through waivers and are first callups along with Chisholm if injuries hit.
