The Cap dumps Ottawa is giving up here would cost a lot more than 2 2nds to give up alone, let alone them getting back a good young player and a solid middle 6er. Maybe something like Murray + Zaitsev + Ottawas early 1st this year for Texier makes more sense, assuming the pick is around the 7-9 range, tho I don’t really see the reason for Ottawa to shed cap to be a playoff team when the only good aspect of their team rn is their forward core (which lacks a true star at the time) and 1 (one) top pair d man

No team in the league is giving a top 10 pick in any draft to facilitate a cap dump.

Plus get back a good young player. But your point stands.

Where this trade is now is a complete underpayment. 10 million dollars in cap for a backup goalie and a bottom defenseman is a hard pill to swallow. That’s even before we move Gus or Tex.

Value wise; that’s what it would cost. Texier himself was rumoured to ask for a late first, the Murray contract costs a late first if not more to dump, and the Zaitsev contract costs a 2nd to dump.

Actuall the fact that Ottawa’s not in cap trouble means the value goes down cause there is no pressure but also Murray will be on LTIR half the time. Arizona could take him and just wait put that contract to reach the cap floor. Zaitsev Ottawa does not need to dump.

Can I ask what you’re basing these values on?

Zaitsev dump compared to Dadanov/Staal dumps. Murray’s contract is a 6.25 or something like that for 2 years. Marleau had 1 year of that and cost a 1st to be dumped, and while Murray likely wouldn’t be bought out and could provide some value as a goalie, he still is overpaid by minimum 3.5 mil compared to what you’d estimate a backup to get in FA for 2 years, which is what the Marleau buy out costed Carolina for 2 years

Those were situations where teams needed to move contracts to get under the cap. Ottawa isn't even hitting the cap floor yet next season so why are they paying to move contracts?

I’m not saying they should do it. I’m saying this is what it would cost to move the contracts, like the original trade in the post had done

I mean... Dadonov was traded for a 3rd and Holden, Ottawa paid nothing to get rid of him. They GOT paid. Staal was traded with 2 years left on his deal at 5.75 while also being a pylon. Marleau was more than capable of playing on his contract but was a cap casualty because Toronto could make it work under the cap and was only bought out because he refused to play for Carolina. Obviously the Dadonov trade doesnt really qualify because Ottawa didnt pay anything to get rid of him but in both the Staal and Marleau trades the main reason they were giving significant assets is because they were up against the cap and teams knew they were desperate and the price went up.

Ottawa is in no rush to dump any contracts and are more concerned with the cap floor than the ceiling. If it costs that much to dump any player on the roster then the sensible thing to do is to ride the contract out. Melnyk's gone. The internal cap is no more so acting like it's there makes no sense.

I was referring to the vetoed Dadanov trade this deadline where he was traded with a 2nd round pick to Anaheim in exchange for a rental cap dump in Moore (I believe had some minor retained salary but regardless he would be taking up some space in the minors) and the LTIR contract of Ryan Kesler. As for the Staal trade, he had 1 year left at 5.7 mil; this is his 2nd year as a Red Wing and he was resigned last offseason to a 1 year deal. And finally, again, I’m not the one saying that they should dump these contracts; it makes more sense to keep assets and let them run out on their own. I was simply just assuming what a mock trade would actually be

Yeah my bad on the Staal trade. Completely forgot about the vetoed trade with Dadonov as well. However I think my point still stands about cap desperation driving the price of cap dumps up. Dadonov has had a better season in Vegas than he did in Ottawa yet the price went from acquiring a serviceable bottom pair veteran defenceman and a 3rd to having to pay a 2nd just to get someone to eat the contract with a year less on the term.

For all I know you might be right on prices, just wanted to throw that out there.
