Here is what I see.

Nic Ehlers 57 Games 26 goals and 51 points
Alex Formenton 74 games 17 goals and 30 points

How does he make Winnipeg better?

He is an elite penalty killer, is capable of playing with high end skill, and creates space for those around him.

Also, he is not the only part of the deal.

I hear you, and i think its a great idea to build around. But how do any of those pcs make Winnipeg better now? In 4-5 years from now when those picks play we will be in our rebuild. Our window is 2-3 years at best with this group. Ehlers has more value to Winnipeg then what you are offering up. Winnipeg would need Batherson just to keep the window open. That is what we are trying to say.

only makes sense for Jets to trade Ehlers is if they rebuild, they need help on D IMO, they need a Chabot type D, maybe Sergy from tampa might be available and would be a good target for them

Okay, then you are not trading Ehlers. As you basically just shut that down with what you said.

I'd rather see who else we can get in free agency besides Giroux before taking a run at Ehlers.

Again, at no point was this a 1 for 1 deal so I don't understand why the straight up comparable??? There are 3 players in the deal PLUS a first rounder AND an early 2nd rounder. That's a lot of compensation vs. your straight up comparison.

If you look at the Karlsson deal once again, it looked like a terrible trade for Ottawa. Norris has emerged, unexpectedly as a #1 NHL centreman, and Stutzle has the potential to be one of the greatest players in the team's history. You cannot discount the 1st round pick, when it is likely a top 10 pick.

With that all said, in my ACGM description, I said this was an unlikely move that was worth a shot. The compensation Winnipeg would receive is equitable IMO.

I assume the Jets would only trade him if they were going to blow it up so I doubt they would be concerned with making their current product better.

You are wrong. Formenton isn't good enough. A fine bottom 6 player, but he doesn't get an elite 1st line winger.

correct it is Formenton and 4 additional pretty good pieces. Some would argue the 5 players / picks is overpayment. I doubt Ehlers would be moved anyways.

unprotected 1st are VERY VERY rarely traded now, even tampa and the panthers have top 10 protection of the firsts they traded this year

Totally get that, I guess if this trade even did happen it would be at the draft so they’d know what Ottawas pick is. If it was a top 5 pick I’d imagine they say yes. One of Nemec/Jiricek + that deal seems like a pretty good return. It all comes down to whether or not the jets would be rebuilding as that’s the only way Ehlers gets moved. In that case everyone is available, PLD, Morrissey, Connor. No one is safe, jets would be looking to get as many picks and prospects so they’d likely ask for something other than Brannstrom as they don’t need someone like brannstrom for their rebuild.

Exactly. We're back to the original point. The Jets have zero reason to move Ehlers for a quantity deal.

If they ever did move him it would need to be as close to a one for one deal as possible. Like the Laine/Dubois trade.

You just called a 27 year old Karlsson at the tail end of his career, man, you are on fire today, you also are not supposed to move a first line winger in Batherson for a first line winger in Ehlers. Also Karlsson was the face of the franchise and an All-Star defenseman, Ehlers, is not the face of the franchise for Winnipeg, he is not a franchise winger, that is Connor.

I get what you're saying but Ehlers is certainly a better player than Batherson and he is better than Connor. Ehlers has been the Jets best player for like 3 seasons now.

Yeah, Ehlers is not better than Connor, Batherson and Ehlers I think are very close players and if Batherson can replicate the success he had before his injury over a full season there could be an argument that Batherson is a bit better.

He is better though. Besides finishing, there is nothing Connor does better than Ehlers

Driving his line, playing with pace, finishing, setting up players using his speed, there is not much different but Connor is hands down the better player.

But if we go with you're point you'd charge less for Connor cause he is the worse player correct?

Yes, he is not as good as Ehlers so he should be less but he would be worth more most likely

Trading Ehlers means they are going full rebuild. 5 for 1 deals and hoping it turns out is not much of a plan. They will want young players/prospects that can step in right away.

Pieces that make sense for the Jets:
Schneider or 2022 1st (the 1st was offered in OP)
+
Pinto (Ottawa dealing from a position of strength with Norris, Stutzle, White)
+
Boucher or Ridly (a winger to play possibly in the top 6)
