If the leafs aquire his rights before free agency, they can sign him for 8 years, which is why I flipped a 5th to Colorado. I think an 8 year deal brings down the AAV a bit plus I think he would sign a discount to play for the leafs again.

Acquiring a player's rights doesn't mean you can offer them the 8th year, It just means you have first dibs to sign them and it's still 7 years. In order to offer the 8th year you would've needed to acquire him at the trade deadline.

Who cares if you won a cup. Criticism will come if you dont perform. If Crosby or Ovie were quiet in a playoff series they would be heavily criticized. Heck crosby won back to back cups and still got criticized when Penguins lost round one for the past 3 years after recently winning their cups . And Ovie got heavily blamed for the loss against the Canes in game 7 after winning his cup. As if Tampa's stars didnt perform this series and they go out in 6 or 7 they would be criticized as by not performing no 3 cups in a row.

As he still ended the season with 76 points without playing the entire season and was 3 away from another 30 goal season. And people say thats an off year. There are players who would kill for an off year like that lul

But if people feel he aint a good center no more there is a very simple solution. As like what Tampa did with Stamkos and Philly did with Giroux move JT to wing and his production will be even better. As Giroux was a prime example of how moving a fading center to wing can re-energize their careers.
