I love Topi. He's the real deal. We've got some pretty sweet young defenseman under contract, between Sandin / Liljegren / Niemela, plus Rielly locked down for 8 more years, we are set

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but Reilly's contract is crazy. Starts now for 8 years? It'll be like other aged dmen in 3,4 years.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with Liljegren this summer though. It'll be a tough signing

Rielly's deal is a steal in this age considering all the Dman who are making 8-10mill now and some of which are worse than him lul. Remember Pitrangelo is making 8.8mill and since signing that deal has been a shell of his former self.

Rielly since he signed that deal had his second best NHL season and had a good playoff showing. By the time he starts to slow down Sandin should be ready to take the role as the #1 Dman or it could be one of the other LD prospects we got. Its not a concern now as Rielly is no where near that yet.

And nothing will happen with Liligren he will sign a deal and have a full time role on this team. This year was his breakout year and from the looks of things hes only gonna improve

As for 2022 if Niemela has a strong showing and makes it probs will see

We'll have to see if Niemela is coming to the North American and the Marlies or spends another year in Finland. Leafs have few true NHL Dman prospects. What like to see what he can do with the Marlies and hopefully a good NHLer sooner than later.

I believe hes coming to work with the Leafs training staff and they will see if he makes it out of camp. If he does make it hes a member of the Leafs 2022-2023 team.

But if he doesnt instead of the Marlies per the rules since he signed a deal in Liiga he will be back in Liiga till the end of the Liiga season. But once the season is over he can either join the Marlies or Leafs depending on how well he does.

Now to me I think his game will translate well and having a vet partner in Muzzin should help him out. I think he is a year away but next to Knies hes the prospect to watch. Also got his WJC partner Kokkonen in our system so thats something to work around.

Let's see what Reilly looks like in 2026, I guess. Who knows, maybe you're right, but I can't think of many dmen who kept playing at a high level beyond 33 years.
I agree Lillgren will sign obviously...I'm saying it'll be tough cap-wise and term-wise.
Anyways, yes Leafs defence will be better next year for sure.
Should make Steve Simmons happy at least. Not that he deserves to be happy...lol
