Detroit easily declines that not trading 2 years of Kronwall especially not giving up the #9 pick to do so.

I don't see this making any sense for Toronto. I know Kronwall played for Babcock but he is too old and doesn't fit the age of the team. Basically what you are offering Toronto is a first round pick and a cap dump that will cost them their biggest trade chip, a prospect, and 2 second rounders. Makes no sense.

And the Wings say "NO THANK YOU". He could go on he LTIR and we would recoup that money and keep our pick at #9. WE sure are not trying to help Toronto. Hey for kicks, maybe we throw in Mantha.

Creative idea! I'm assuming this purposed DET trade happens during the draft? If so, and Liljegren is still on the board, I don't think DET management pulls the trigger. Personally, I'd wait out Kronwall's contract and get a stud D prospect rather than move the contract and lose the pick. He's only one the books for one more year after this coming season; well worth waiting for if you ask me.

Also, there's no game changing UFA this summer like Stamkos so I doubt Holland and Co. make a similar maneuver to last year where they passed on Chychrun to move Datsyuk's cap hit.

Swapping 2017 1st rounders would make it more likely. Not sure if the Wings can afford to drop completely out of the first round. I think Holland has "made his bed" with all these long term contracts and now he has to sleep in it. The smart, non-sexy thing to do is to wait them out and hoard some draft picks.

What would you say to (assuming getting our 2017 1st means getting Liljegren):

To TOR:

Jonathan Ericsson (alternate cap dump)
2017 1st (9 Overall aka Liljegren)
2017 3rd (take your pick, we have four)

To DET:

2017 1st (18 Overall)
2018 2nd (SJS)
Kasperi Kapanen

I think Toronto could get more for Kapanen. They need a D and I don't think Ericsson is the answer. This makes more sense than Kronwall though

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ericsson is Toronto's answer on D either. But neither is Kronwall. They are both aging, underperforming players on pretty bad contracts. The reason I suggested Ericsson instead of Kronwall is that he's under contract for another year beyond what Kronwall is. This would serve as a more enticing cap dump for DET than Kronwall. Just trying to bridge the gap that would make passing on Liljegren more acceptable.

Since it's Ericsson coming back, perhaps the leafs take out Kapanen and put someone else with a bit less potential in his place, maybe Leipsic.

TOR:
DeKeyser
2017 1st rd pick (Liljegren)
2018 2nd rd pick

DET:
Kapanen
Marincin
2017 1st rd pick
2017 2nd rd pick

This way TOR gets their guy Liljegren and instead of having to chose between 2 unserviceable D-men (Kronwall/Ericsson) they get DeKeyser. And they keep JVR to use in a trade elsewhere - which would make more sense - to get say, another D-man from ANA.

While maybe fair, I don't think Holland and Co. will be moving DeKeyser. He will most likely be protected in the expansion draft (at the expense of either Ouellet or Jensen most likely) and his value is at an all-time low after his struggle-filled 16/17 season. That being said, I think I would pull the trigger on what you purposed if you changed the 2018 2nd to one of our 2017 3rds.

Also of note, assuming this trade is done at the entry draft (after protecting DDK in the expansion draft) this trade would probably leave DET with one of the worst defenses in NHL history. Losing Ouellet or Jensen to Vegas, trading DDK to TOR, we would be left with Green, Ouellet/ Jensen, Ericsson, Kronwall, Sproul, and Russo (if we resign him). Yikes lol. Hopefully the D prospects take a huge leap forward.

I'd be banking on the D prospects a little bit; also maybe a little bit on trading Tatar/Nyquist for a d-man also. But I'm also not expecting to be any good next year anyways. Maybe we can get a high draft pick in a better draft next year, and maybe we can even sign Fowler next offseason. Either way, it helps our cap situation moving forward.

Man, speaking as a usually biased Leaf fan, Detroit shouldn't make that trade. A top-4 D and a top 10 pick in exchange for a pick most likely around 17-18th overall this year, Kapanen, a second (which pretty much cancels out the 2018 second from DET), and Marincin.
So, get rid of the offsetting 2nds and you have

Kapanen, Marincin, 2017 first no.17 overall
In exchange for:
DDK, pick no.9.

Good trade for the leafs, not so good for the wings.
