Miller can be added without giving away Nylander. A 1 for 1 and Vancouver has to add. And it will have to be a good asset as well, they will not resign Miller who's going to want a major contract for most of his 30's. For Toronto they would offer up futures for a 1 season rental. Not a star forward in his prime. That's just bad asset management.

Vancouver adds?
It’s simple Miller > Nylander Toronto adds

Miller is a upcoming FA. Nylander has another year. Term costs more. Miller can be obtained for other assets beyond Nylander. It makes no sense to make that trade. Why would the Leafs move Nylander for 1 season of Miller and then need to fill a massive hole upfront after the season? Why not send Kerfoot, Robertson, a 1st and whatever else it would take to get Miller at 50%?

Leafs gain 4.3 million in cap space for this upcoming season while upgrading their top 6.

Obviously leafs add in this scenerio

They do not. They would say no. Immediately.

And then they would offer Kerfoot and futures. You are not getting Nylander for free. And that is exactly what a Nylander for Miller is. You get a younger player with term who you can either keep or move for a huge haul because he has term all for a guy TO is losing after the season. Why would they do that? Why not keep Nylander, a point a game, game breaker, and offer a different package to get Miller at half price. You aren't getting a player of Nylander's calibre for 1 year of Miller. Not from anyone

On extra year of nylander does not makeup for the fact that he is 3 time more expensive and not as good.

Leafs homer goggles blinding you right now

Kerfoot plus futures would work if those future are liljegren and a 1st and no retention on miller

Because Robertson Kerfoot and a first gets a big fat “no” from Jimmy Ruthford. The Canucks turned down Chytil Lundkvist and a first. Any trade is going to have to do better

Okay, what do the Leafs do when they no longer have Miller? Unless they just signed Forsberg for 7x7, that's atrocious asset management and need the cap asap.

Forsberg signing for 7x7 with the Leafs and the Kerfoot proposals (with retention or not) is much more realistic than the original proposal

Might get turned down, lots of offers get turned down. Dubas wouldn't ever be a gm again doing the original trade proposal

The point of the trade would be getting a better top 6 next year while up grading other parts on their roster with the 4.3 million in cap space they carved out.

It’s an all in move. If Toronto isn’t interested that’s fine, but the value is clearly in Toronto’s favour as is

I didn’t know that trade a player for a better player for a third of the cap hit is a bad trade. Considering Dubas is still a GM after trading a first round pick for Nick Foligno, I’m going to assume he’s gonna be around for a while anyway

How many years has Miller been "better" than Nylander, and GMs gamble with picks and sometimes prospects to try and win, they don't trade elite players with term for rentals. And I suggest you look at the Kapanen trade and McCann trades between Rutherford and Dubas.

Adding Miller and while subtracting Nylander wouldn't be an all in move, it would be moving someone considered part of the core for a rental. If they are adding Miller, they would trade future pieces/own rentals

I think Rutherford is going to leave the trading to his GM Allvin

Good thing president of hockey operations isn’t the one making the trades. That’s GM Patrik Allvin’s job
