Leafs - WPG

Created by: HollywoodHudon
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: May 26, 2022
Published: May 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
WPG gets younger and more affordable and adds a high-end prospect D in Sandin as comp for eating half of Wheeler's $$$ for the 2 years remaining on his deal.

Kerfoot can go anywhere in the lineup and will certainly help improve WPG's 5th worst ranked PK .

Nylander is a game breaker who is younger and more productive than Wheeler.

And let's be honest, Scheifele and Wheeler have been called out by teammates and need a change of scenery.

Adding a mid round pick or a B prospect wouldn't change anything from the Leafs side of things, so if necessary, can be added to get the deal done.

I am no Jets lineup specialist, so edit the lineup however you see fit. :)

I'm sure Jets fans are going to want a bigger return for Schiefele and Wheeler, but in reality, Wheeler's contract almost makes him untradeable IMO. So getting some solid pieces back in Sandin, Nylander and even Kerfoot is not a bad deal for both sides.

Makes room for Perfetti to play in the middle in the top 6 too which is nice.

None of the pieces are needed or of interest to Winnipeg.

Wheeler's contract diminishes the value of any Scheifele trade so they should be done separately.

The jets should do this in a heart beat. Basing this on Wheeler and Scheifle wanting out of course. I personally would love to see Scheifle play out his career in Winnipeg

You dont think the jets are in need of a top six right hand shooting close to point per game player in Nylander? Kinda seems like it's exactly what they need?
I do agree the jets dont really need Kerfoot or a young, smaller LSD though

A right shot top 6 forward would be great, but not an expensive, soft, me first, perimeter winger that is guaranteed to walk as a UFA in 2 years. Adding Nylander at the cost of Scheifele is a move backwards. The Jets would be the same team they were 2 years ago before the Laine trade. A winger heavy team, with no center depth. The Jets would immediately need to start looking for another top 6 center and we all know how hard they are to find.

Overall, 2 years of Scheifele, even if he continues playing as bad as he did this year, is better than 2 years of Nylander playing his best. All the issues Scheifele has, Nylander has. Except Nylander is a complimentary winger, not a play driving PPG 1C.

There's a reason Leaf fans are constantly trying to dump Nylander. He's an expensive player that isn't a difference maker and disappears in physical games.

I don't see the Jets having any interest in going backwards.

Thats ridiculous. $7m for a point a game player is a bargain. And why is there a "GUARANTEE" Nylander moves on when he becomes UFA? Why the Leaf fans always have Nylander in trade talks is simple. Matthews is untouchable, Tavares is immovable AND has an NTC, Marner is invaluable and over a $10m cap hit making him for the most part untradeable, Rielly just signed a huge extension. So the next most valuable piece the Leafs have, happens to be affordable for what he provides, and that is Nylander! Its just a matter of going down the talent chart to see who realistically CAN be moved for a maximum return. Willy is top of that list. Beleive me... if we can get a Schiefele/Wheeler and NOT give up Nylander we would do it all day every day!!! but that is not going to happen so... Nylander offers are what you will get!

Well Nylander is nowhere near as good as Scheifele and is paid more. That makes him a bad deal for the Jets.
