Risky Center Signing

Description
Trocheck, Copp, Malkin, Bergeron, etc. don't want to come here or Yzerman doesn't want them. There is a lack of good trade options for a top 50 center in the NHL as well. This leads to signing Strome. How bad is it? Can we sign Strome without sigining an elite winger to pair him with? We don't have a Panarin anywhere on our roster. I put in a Forsberg signing, but we have the cap space for anyone willing to move from their current team, really, so don't get hung up on him specifically. I am just asking if we can add Strome without feeling the need to significantly upgrade his wingers. Can we pair him with our better wingers and downgrade Larkin's wingers, or do we need to get a Forsberg or Gaudreau level of player to make Strome work as 2C? What UFA winger would fit best with Strome? Or am I dead wrong and Strome can carry a line if asked?

Yes, I know the left side on D is still terrible. I see repeated calls on here to just wait for Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder, etc. to be ready to take over and not trade for anyone even with just 2-3 years remaining on their contract, so here we are. No Schmidt, Pettersson, Martinez, Muzzin, etc.

I don't like the UFA goalie class other than guys who will want term that won't make sense for us given where we are right now and Cossa being just 2-3 years away from cracking the lineup (I hope).

Coming from a Rangers Fan perspective, I think Strome can work as a 2c with a scoring winger and defensively responsible winger. Thats how he's worked best in NY. I think there were enough flashes without Panarin to show he can work fine enough with others, but I think you'd still need an elite level winger to get the most out of him. Very solid passer, and can get somewhat streaky with scoring, though the stretches where he can't seem to hit the side of a barn seem like forever. Lot to be desired still in the face-off department and defensively, but I think he's a low-mid level 2c. I'd be cautious though about giving him more than 5 million, even though I think he'll get it on the open market. I'm also not too familiar with the wings center prospects but if theres someone who could push him down to the 3rd line within the next couple of years that contract probably won't age very well.

Strome is an obvious upgrade from suter and I can see him centering vrana and zadina\berggren on that 2nd line. There are no centers in the system that are even close to ready and even if we draft 1 its still 2 years minimum before we see them. I hope they do something.

Is copp being resigned there pretty much guaranteed at this point?

There is no way someone named Joren Van Pottelberghe is a real human being. Not a chance

I think they prefer Copp over Strome, though I think they are also going to be cautious with him on term and aav. I think thats probably their option A at this point. After that I'm not too sure what they would look to do, whether it would be to try out Chytil at 2c, maybe go for Strome if Copp is too expensive or try and get someone in a trade or free agency. Think its going to come down to AAV on whatever decision because although they could resign Copp it will definitely make the next few years tight, especially if Laffy, Miller and Chytil continue to get better, they'll all be up for extensions after next year.

Doubtful. Veleno or Rasmussen would be the only young centers with some additional upside. Rasmussen seems to fit better on the wing. Veleno might be very good 3C as a ceiling, though I would love to be wrong about that. Of the prospects not in the NHL, Niederbach is probably the best bet, and he probably has a similar ceiling to Veleno, maybe a bit lower. Any other center that could supplant him is yet to be drafted.

I get the concerns about Strome needing an elite scoring winger, but IF he’s able to be signed for around 5M, are we sure that Vrana and Zadina would not be the scorers (potential scorer in Zadina’s case) that Strome would thrive with?
