The trade makes sense if Price is going on LTIRetirement. Tavares is declining, and the Leafs could improve their team more with the 11 million x 3 years in cap space than they could with Tavares on their roster. While LTIR isn't the same as free cap space, the Leafs are very likely to be as close as possible to the cap ceiling, with no room to bank cap anyways. That isn't to say Tavares is a bad player. It is to say he is not worth 11 million dollars, and will decline even more before that contract is up. The Leafs are already stacked up front. They could move that 11 million into acquiring defense or a legit starting goalie, while also using it to extend Nylander, since Tavares would still be on the books when Nylander needs a raise.
The big hitch is that I highly doubt Tavares will waive to leave Toronto. This is pajama boy. He clearly is a mark for the Leafs. I don't understand why he would waive to spend what might be the last three impactful years of his career on a rebuilding team. If he waives his NTC, it's reasonable to assume he'd want to go to a contender.
Tavares for Bobrovsky would make more sense. Tavares would be more likely to waive for Florida, since they are a contender, and he'd get a raise via taxes. Florida is rumored to want out from Bobrovsky's contract. Bobrovsky is in a similar spot to Tavares, in that he is still a solid NHL player, but he isn't worth his cap hit. Most of all, he chokes in the playoffs, so he would fit right in with the Maple Leafs.
