Sorry, but this is just plain stupid...............longer term, less impact on the team, esp if he spends the next 5 years on LTIR

I think the trade would increase Toronto chances of winning the cup and increases Montreal's chances of making the playoff
My thinking is you need a top goalie to win the cup, if price is healthy you got one if not you freed up cap space and you get ride of Jt's contract that is bad now. Montreal gets a top line center that should help get them to the playoffs as Toronto should get to the playoffs without JT. The trade increase the chance of Montreal making the playoffs and Toronto relieves themselves of JT contract and if price can play you have a top goalie and if not you get cap space. basically trading untradeable contracts if player agree to it (which I don't see JT agreeing to)

The problem is, Price will never play a full season again, and can't be counted on to be healthy for the playoffs. And his contract is 2 years longer at only a 500K savings. I know you hate JT, but this just doesn't make sense.........

Thats fine for TO if Price can't play they get the cap space. TO is not worried about the 10 mill to Price. Toronto would be happy to spend another 10 mill to sign others instead of paying JT 11 million for another 3 years
It won't happen regardless JT is not going agree to go anywheres

The problem is that summer there no Long term injury list which mean the 10m of price will count in the cap and you can only be 10% over.

The trade makes sense if Price is going on LTIRetirement. Tavares is declining, and the Leafs could improve their team more with the 11 million x 3 years in cap space than they could with Tavares on their roster. While LTIR isn't the same as free cap space, the Leafs are very likely to be as close as possible to the cap ceiling, with no room to bank cap anyways. That isn't to say Tavares is a bad player. It is to say he is not worth 11 million dollars, and will decline even more before that contract is up. The Leafs are already stacked up front. They could move that 11 million into acquiring defense or a legit starting goalie, while also using it to extend Nylander, since Tavares would still be on the books when Nylander needs a raise.

The big hitch is that I highly doubt Tavares will waive to leave Toronto. This is pajama boy. He clearly is a mark for the Leafs. I don't understand why he would waive to spend what might be the last three impactful years of his career on a rebuilding team. If he waives his NTC, it's reasonable to assume he'd want to go to a contender.

Tavares for Bobrovsky would make more sense. Tavares would be more likely to waive for Florida, since they are a contender, and he'd get a raise via taxes. Florida is rumored to want out from Bobrovsky's contract. Bobrovsky is in a similar spot to Tavares, in that he is still a solid NHL player, but he isn't worth his cap hit. Most of all, he chokes in the playoffs, so he would fit right in with the Maple Leafs.
