The gap between Marner and Batherson is far more than the gap between the #3 d man Zub is and a the #4/5 d man that Holl is

You're right, like emoprettyboy said, 4.9M vs 10.9M is a pretty big gap.

Batherson would score a lot of points playing with Matthews too, he's quite good at passing the puck. So even if Marner is a clear upgrade, it is not worth it for Ottawa to add 6 M$ on the cap just like that (2 years less too!) and create a gigantic HOLE on RD

Ottawa doesn't do that

Zub is a pending UFA, and with their upcoming d men, he will get overtaken before long. Zub is good, a capable 2nd pair guy, but the gap between him and Holl is not a franchise defying change, not at all. Batherson is really good, but in todays league quality is valued more than anything really. Marner is a top 7 winger at worst, and if he continues playing the the way he did the 2nd half of last season he will push for top 3/4. Dubas would be fired on the spot for this based on that level of play gap, even if cap wise it’s more even. Just look at the Eichel trade; Eichel 10M forward, Tuch was a very solid forward himself at 5Mish. The gap in pays is big, but due to the gap in level of play, Vegas added a lot. Now, Batherson is better than Tuch, yes, but Marners situation has him at more value than Eichel. Not only is he the better player than Eichel was/is, but Eichel was also going into a very risky surgery + had actually requested a trade, unlike Marner has

ok that's where it goes sideways. I can assure you 100% that if he was a Maple Leafs, you'd be singing a very different tune

Of course, he'd have to come with an extension in place in a trade like that. Good thing is he wouldn't cost a lot since he doesn't produce more offense.

Why would nobody seems to be interested in that trade then? Marner makes more than DOUBLE AAV of Batherson and has 2 years less before UFA... If Batherson was paid 8.0 then I would totally agree here but his contract is a pure bargain, contenders would KILL to have Batherson and his contract. Is Marner 2 x better than Batherson? I mean if he was playing with a generational player like Matthews?
