Can Detroit sign Larkin to an extension before the end of the 22-23 season and still trade him as a rental at the 2023 trade deadline? Will be still technically be considered UFA until July 1, then immediately be under contract with Detroit again?

Seems unlikely from the Ranger side, especially if they know Larkin isn't re-signing.

No. You could trade him as a rental then resign him in free agency but not before

As a Rangers fan, I would do it tbh. All expendable pieces for us, and worth it for the playoff run next year.

Based on the Rangers cap situation, especially if the re-sign Copp, Larkin wouldn't even fit.

Fair enough. I think in fake world this makes sense, but in the real world this never happens.

Plus, this is quantity over quality - The 1st and Robertson would likely be enough, if the Wings knew he was coming back in 3 months.

The only way this could theoretically happen, is if Detroit and Larkin meet in a back room and make a behind closed doors deal for him to return in free agency; trade him before he signs (risk on his part because more games can lead to injury); goes to free agency not resigning with NYR and then signs the deal. Keep in mind, since Detroit traded him, they would only be able to sign him for 7 years, not 8. That may up the price point.

Even as a rental, Yzerman would get a far better offer than this for Larkin. Besides yeah he can be resigned long term come July 13th the start of free agency. Rumors are they might just do a short term deal now and then a longer term deal later.
