Can someone tell me if this is possible?

Can Detroit sign Larkin to an extension before the end of the 22-23 season and still trade him as a rental at the 2023 trade deadline? Will be still technically be considered UFA until July 1, then immediately be under contract with Detroit again?

He would be on the team that he is traded to with the extension. Can't be a UFA

Now what if the Devils traded him with future considerations that he be returned to them after the playoff run? Is that legal?

Future considerations is a fancy way of saying "no return". Larkin could sign with Detroit after the season but there's nothing they can do in a trade which would make Larkin return to Detroit.
