Description

The Islanders have been a team that has found success the last few seasons (not including last year) by being a defensive team that outlasts teams with their depth. I would like to stick to that identity, and although it would be great to sign a guy like Forsberg or Gaudreau, add a young guy like Fiala, or move Heaven and Earth for DeBrincat or Pasta, the team would lose its identity. By adding a big fish like that, the rest of the team/future would be depleted and cap troubles would arrive in coming years. The Islanders are in a weird spot right now where they have to both be “win now” but also preserve picks and young players for the future, as we are the oldest team in the league. So, taking that into account, here is what I would do if I were Lou Lamoriello.

Also, I know Bailey is almost an insta-trade for any Isles ACGM, but I can’t bring myself to trade him and see him play his 1000th game in another uniform. I think he could definitely be moved at the deadline if this team doesn’t workout and is out of a playoff position, but I doubt that. I think Bailey is still a decent enough playmaker that turns it up to another gear in the playoffs, which has value.

Keeping a player just to play his 1000th game is the most insane thing a GM can do. It’s basically telling the fanbase he prioritizes loyalty over winning

Loyalty to players can be a good thing. Can attract free agents and get guys to sign cheaper contracts

I really hate to be that guy but this statement doesnt make sense. I hate the people that respond to your opinion with " you dont know what will happen so your opinion means nothing". But this isnt your opinion. This is you saying you know what will happen (which you cant know unless youre in the EDM front office) as evidenced by the fact that you corrected "they shouldnt" (opinion) with "they wouldnt" (fact).
Everyone will point to hall for larsson but theres also strome for spooner, strome for eberle, griffin reinhart for 15oa and a 2nd. You have no idea what holland will do and saying that you do is just plain false.

It can also creates a country club atmosphere, which is what the isles experienced this past season. There is no evidence that being loyal to declining vets gets top of the lineup free agents to come, if you’re arguing that keeping Bailey would get Patrick marleau to come out of retirement because he knows his spot is safe, then yeah sure - but why would you want that?

If the isles can trade Devon Toews a day after his wedding , they can trade Bailey before he plays 1000 games

Would Matt Martin have been on the ice with Terry and Zegras? Otherwise how is he going to deter the crap Beagle pulled?

Having a “tough guy” doesn’t deter players from doing stupid stuff. Subban slewfooted Zegras while Deslauriers was on his line and nothing happened in game.
