Keith and Smith Retire Kassian gone

Created by: JBrger18
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2022
Published: Jun. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is truly an "ideal" situation as some may view it with the two veterans retiring. Although I actually liked Keith on the team this year, his cap hit is extremely high. Let me know your thoughts on the trades and signings. Keith and Smith on LTIR as they are retiring. Klef is staying on LTIR as I don't think they can sacrifice any picks or prospects for a team to take on the contract... And don't think it would be worth the cost. Also if Kuzmenko signs with Edmonton I would not sign Trevor Lewis, and have Kuzmenko on a one year deal at $925k AAV.

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Soucy, Carson
  2. 2023 4th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
I would be satisfied with a fifth round as well. I do value the services Barrie has to offer, and so would a team who is lacking a puck moving defenseman
2.
EDM
Detroit needs to hit the cap floor, so this would help them out. Might as well ship Kassian out of the division
    DET
    1. Benson, Tyler [RFA Rights]
    2. Kassian, Zack
    3. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
    Additional Details:
Not sure if just a third would get it done, or a prospect would be needed... So that is why I picked Benson. I know he isn't the highest prospect in any world, but might have a chance to get more NHL games in on their roster

Going to cost a hell of a lot more than that to offload Kassian

Always love when someone tells a team they have to hit the cap.floor. Last year some dude from Philly was trying to peddle JVR and called me stupid saying Wings need to hit the cap floor. And WOW Wings did it with out taking on a bad contract and giving up anything. Stevie will use his cap to cherry pick a player he wants not one being forced on him. And Be so is an AHL all star but not even a bottom six forward in the NHL.

The 'needing to hit the cap floor' narrative is one of the dumbest in hockey.

I look at the Nick Ritchie template as the Kassian Base Case.

Ritchie was making $2.5M with 2 years remaining. Leafs him + a 2nd for Lyubushkin + Dzigal. I think given the extra 700k, Kassian and a 2nd with no retention for "future considerations" is the base. Maybe you add a minor prospect but Benson could have been claimed for nothing last year so yotes do not want him.

Agreed. it should be to gain assets not just it the floor. But i dont see it costing a 1st to trade kassian

Ritchie only had one more year left, any team taking Kassian would be getting him for two full seasons, do agree it shouldn't take a 1st to dump Kassian though.

Arizona didn't do very good in that trade, they probably could've gotten a late 2nd had they just traded Lybushkin somewhere on his own so to take Ritchie plus trade a decent asset in Lybushkin for just a 3rd or way future 2nd was poor asset management by the Coyotes.

Call it a bad trade; call it whatever, it happened and sets more precedent than just saying it should have been more. Plus he was traded last year and is playing under the same contract this year. Yotes will have him for 1.5 seasons. its pretty close

Well did the Larsson for Hall trade set a precedent, no it didn't.

Kassian is a $900K bigger cap hit and has another year than Ritchie did, can probably dump Kassian for a 2nd but can't see Edmonton getting a Lybushkin type asset back, Benson has little to no value and the hitting the cap floor angle means nothing.

Agreed. Kassian + a 2nd gets you nothing back which is ok because the cap space is the importance. Lybushkin was needed by theleafs to moonlight as a top 4 guy. Oilers top 9 should not need a big signing and their D signing would be a bottom pair if they resign Kulak.

Also Ritch is 2.5M and Kassian is 3.2M = 700k difference wink

    Ohhhhh... lol 😆

I was mixing up Kassian's cap hit with Armia's.

I think they should bring Archibald back no? Love the way he plays for a 4th liner though I see you signed Deslauriers so guess he replaces some of that lost physicality.

I like Kassian, ya never know, some GM might give a late pick for him, stranger things have happened and he plays a style that's tough to find now.

I don't mind Archi. Bob Stauffer really likes Deslauriers due to his physicality.

Archibald was really good at just missing guys and hitting the glass. His best but all playoffs was on Kassian

Detroit have no roster spot for Kassian so would treat him as a pure cap dump.

The price for taking him off your hands would be a 2nd round pick for each of his remaining years or just give us Puljujärvi.
