Description
Bobrovsky has a full no move clause until July 2024 and a buyout proof contract - it is cheaper for Florida to retain 50% on him than buy him out. They also have 5.3 million invested in Hornqvist, who is not good enough for his contract. They retain what his buyout would have cost them because this saves them the next year's buyout figure. This trade gets rid of both contracts for Florida at a cost of 6,767,000 ish dollars and an excellent young player in Lundell, but nets them a little more than 8.5 million in cap space. They have to find someone Bobrovsky is willing to play for, which is important in why this trade happens.

Arizona uses some excess cap space they weren't going to do anything else with to stockpile another 1st round pick. I don't know that this bit of cap space nets a 1st rounder, but that is the most I can see them getting in this case.

Assuming Colorado is one of the few places Bobrovsky would be willing to play given he would have a couple shots at the cup, the Avs get a goal tender 1 year older than Kuemper, who is signed at roughly the duration you would expect to have to sign Kuemper, at roughly half the price. You have added $5,000,000ish in cap space, but gotten roughly equivalent goal tending and a guy who will likely be a good 2c. I think Bobrovsky thrives behind the defense that will be in front of him for the duration of his contract. Even before you pay Arizona, the Avs are under the cap. With the retention, there is an extra 4 million or so to play with. You can also bury Hornqvist if you want and save 1,125,000 more.

Bobrovsky comes with pretty high signing bonuses, though, and Colorado has a history of not paying those.

So you get Bob at fair market value and get Lundell? At 50% retained bobs contract isn’t bad for another two years

Interesting idea, though I don't like the idea of the Avs burning yet another first round pick for yet another goalie who might (or most likely won't) be the second coming of St. Patrick. Kudos for thinking well outside the box though. One other point would be NAK, Sturm and Murray but that's minor. Sturm hasn't been good enough, Murray wasn't good enough and NAK I think Sakic gives a minimum take it or leave it offer. I'd rather see Cogliano and Helm re-signed in those bottom two forward spots tbh but that's just personal preference as I think they've earned it with their play in the play offs.

You're paying a sixth and gettin one of the best young centers in the game. That is a steal for the Avalanche. I really doubt this Florida stuff though.

My bad I hadn't even really clocked Lundell, my mind was working around the shenanigans and just making note of another first pick gone even if it's a low one. That does paint a different picture though it makes it doubtful for Florida I would think. I think maybe it happens if the Avs are a bit more generous than a 6th going back.
