So we take on Mrazek’s full cap hit and retain on Varly? Plus we have to send Mayfield to Toronto too? Sorry pal but trading Sandin to fix all the leafs cap issues is ridiculous.

Isles accept with no retaining I think they islanders would rather just offer sheet sandin for a 4 x 4

Sandin is well on his way to being a top pair caliber defenseman. If Lou wouldn’t accept this then the owners should take away the keys. Solves 2LD without giving up any high picks or prospects

Dumping Mrazek with Sandin is a viable option. Asking for Varly and Mayfield to do so is not.

Only way I could c retaining on Varly is if Toronto is retaining on Mrazek tbh. But Mrazek has two years left so I don’t think that’s a viable option cap wise.

i’d take it. taking on mrazek and also retaining is annoying and ideally they wouldn’t be retaining salary on varlamov but it’s only for one year and sandin solves a lot of their problems. wonder if toronto could throw the 3rd rounder to another team to retain the salary, because i’d for sure do it then.

Sandin (2.5-3 mill) + Mrazek (3.8 mill) = 6.3-6.8 mill

Varlamov (5 mill) + Mayfield (1.45 mill) = 6.45 mill.

Two for two it still leaves a hole at backup goalie and on ur third d pair. Mrazek is a buyout candidate and couldn’t stop a beachball. Love Sandin but the price to get him in this scenario is steep and may take this team out of contention due to cap problems.

I did not, even with retention, they are filling LD2 by giving up their backup goaltender and 3RD. Cap space is the price you pay to acquire one of the better young LD in the league.

Find a third team to retain Varly and I'd consider it. As is, taking back Mrazek too, this is gross

Taking on Mrazek is the same as saying the window is shut. U certainly can’t put him on the ice rn and running Sorokin isn’t the ground is a far from ideal scenario. Buying him out leaves u with dead cap. It’s a very high price to pay for a team that allegedly wants to acquire a top line winger.

It’s irresponsible to assume cap space is always worth less than draft capital. Especially when this team is going to have to give Dobson a bridge deal around 5-6 million in value. Meanwhile you have to give Barzal a raise next off-season and Wahlstrom needs a new contract as well.

It’s funny that isles fans are willing to give up 3 high end assets for Chychrun, but won’t take back cap dumps and expendable players to acquire a better and more valuable asset

sorokin’s going to be starting 55-60 games. mrazek starting approx. 20-25 games isn’t going to kill the team. he started 20 games for the leafs this year and they still comfortably made the playoffs. the cap is pretty much the same if there’s a third team retaining the salary, as the poster above said.

it creates a hole on the third pair, but fixes the gaping hole on the 2nd pair with the exact type of player we need. i’m much more confident in the 3RD options on the FA market than i am in the 2LD choices. it’s a steep price but sandin sets this team up to have a great d-core for years to come

You forget that the isles “backup” has legit trade value where u don’t need to take back a bad contract. Mayfield on is own is also worth a lot so ur trading two assets for a young player and a bad contract. This isn’t the steal u think it is.

It is when you consider the caliber of player Sandin is going to be and what he already is. Then when you take into account the isles have one of the worst prospect pools in the league, this should be a no brainer . You aren’t going to find a better LD for 2.5-3 mill.

I don’t think Mrazek can play for ur team at all. He was atrocious this past year. Again the cap issues u create here would have to be fixed sooner rather than later and u still end up having to trade picks to fix ur LD spot.

There isn’t a LD under the age of 22 who id take over Sandin, at worst this a fair trade. At best it’s a steal
