Curious as to why you'd move anything for DiPietro? You'd have to throw him through waivers anyway (can't imagine he'd get picked up, but who knows...). Unless Van chooses to give him a shot (which would be surprising), he's likely going to be available for nothing via waivers anyway.

The Rangers just re-signed Julien. His usefulness is to be available to "plug holes in a pinch" cheaply. The draft pick is a nice carrot, but no a chance.

Montreal long term would be much better off dumping Petry for whatever they get. Making a guy play a season where you know his family won't join him isn't going to help with future signings. This is a case of short term pain long term gain.

Can’t wait to see a first pairing of Romanov-Savard then 😆

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he is waiver eligible. I still think he has a chance to make an impact in a couple of years, but going into this coming year, assuming the Nucks use Martin as the backup to replace Halak, he'd be the 4th best goalie in the org (Demko-Martin-Silovs-Dipietro). That being said, it could all come down to who plays better in camp-Martin or DiPietro (Martin probably earned the spot with his solid year this season though). Silvovs is still a year or two away from getting a sniff IMO.

MTL have Primeau has a starter in the AHL and probably Kevin Poulin who did great. But I wouldn’t be surprised they claim DiPietro and send Poulin in the ECHL

I feel like you'd still risk losing Dipietro through waivers when you send him down, but yeah, any depth is good depth. I still think we're going to see another Price run though. Could be completely wrong, but that seemed like an awful lot of effort just to come back for 5 games.

I did say it would be painful in the short term, but if i'm an UFA and Petry is not traded I look and say yeah what if something happens with China again is it going to be me kept from my family.

??????. That makes no sense. Even if Habs traded Petry for a 7th rounder, then they have 6.25 to find a RHD. It's not like they are a total black hole on the right side.

He was signed to facilitate a trade. He's not an NHLer

I could be wrong. I agree he is not an NHLer. I also agree with the spirit of your comment. Perhaps Brodzinski is the hole plugger! That said, Drury is shopping and from what I've been reading everyone is a candidate to be moved, everyone. No big contracts with UFAs. I'm on board with that approach. If you go the UFA route, you have to be disciplined. I'm feel certain that your on board with that sentiment. e.g. Copp - at the right price for the right term say $5.5M for 5 yrs. (I think he is ready to breakout) - If he is looking for more - It's Been So Good to Know Ya!!! To get the spirit of where I am coming from READ ON!! I look forward to hearing your thought. Best Regards. ----------------- NHL GMs and NYR GMs in particular may be good hockey people, but none of them are finance majors. Before I focus on the NYR, it should be noted they there are currently 14 players at the $10M or more CAP Hit. Punch the list of them up and you'll find that the number of cups won by the teams that they play for is "doughnut." Yeah I know, Toews and Kane have three each, but they were won when both were making $7.5M each. If there is one guy on the list that commands $10M, I think most would agree its Connor McDavid. If Connor forgoes $2.5M that sets the benchmark, then Leon ..... think about the additional $s that would be available to construct a stronger supporting cast. You can do this with all the other clubs these guys play for including the NYR. The best example of how to do it right is PIT. As a Ranger fan, and no fan of Sidney the Tutu as a rival player (Sid has been the best whiner in the NHL for years), I acknowledge his talent and do RESPECT him in one regard, Sid has been taking $8.7M for years. By doing so the he set the standard, and selflessly left room for the supporting PENS cast. This allowed the PIT to retain a number of solid players, we all know who they are. As a result, Sid and the rest of those guys have three cups on their resumé. It took 15 years for the $s to break down in PIT. Now, in the latter stages of his career, Sid is still one of the top players in the NHL. Removing his age as a factor, how much is Sid worth on the open market today given his production numbers and his faceoff prowess. The defense rests. Now to the NYR. The Panarin and Trouba contracts are awful, and what the NYR did with Fox's contract extension was awful too. Let's start with Adam. I would have extended him at $7.5M until he was a UFA, and then bumped him to $9.5M. Ask yourself, is Adam at $9.5M that much more valuable than Kreids at $6.5M. Trouba is worth no more than $6M. Lindgren and Miller taken in up in steps to $6M, Schneider looks like a candidate to get to $6M. You get the idea. Low and Slow. Krieds was limited by a lesser supporting cast than the one he is playing with now for most of his career. He was the one rebuild decision the NYR got right. I mean all of these guys, even the guys at the bottom of the salary scale will be multi- millionaires and set for the rest of lives when their playing days are over. In my world, and using the current salary cap; Panarin $9.5M Fox $7.5M, Trouba $6M vs. their current contracts would put and additional $6.1M in the kitty to upgrade the rest of the roster. I just focused on the two most egregious contracts and reflected the difference if Fox's extension were handled differently. I know the counter arguments "You can't do this in todays market ..........) yada yada yada. Here's the test. You are Adam Fox, native New Yorker and lifelong Ranger fan, you want to play here. I'm the Ranger GM and I hold a closed door meeting with all the players (the current Ranger locker room is tight). I take them through the analysis I just proffered, and with no agents around, posed the following question "Are you here for the bucks or are you here for the cups?" How would Adam reply or for that matter, any of the other players. But let's focus on Adam's response.

You don’t find a RHD like Petry just like that
MTL are already over the cap, if Petry gets traded, they will be cap compliant. Adding another RHD means over the cap again. Savard is a #5 while Wideman is a #6. Barron isn’t NHL ready. So yeah, we would be in trouble if Petry leaves. We are already in trouble with Petry so I can’t imagine without him. Schueneman Barron or Wideman on the 2nd pairing isn’t the best but it is good for the tank
