Ain't no way Sens take on Wheeler and his 8.25m cap X 2 years. Now 50% retention traded for a 4th rounder might do it.

hahaha. did you read tsn today? The Sens are the ones who reached out to Winnipeg about Wheeler. No way the Jets are going to retain on a guy who is almost a ppg player. Bad locker room presence or not. I am not a Wheeler fan, but you sir are nuts if you don't think he will pull in value.

A lot of people on here talk about retention. That very seldom happens in this league, maybe at the deadline but not for a player with more than a year remaining.

HaHa. Why do believe what reporters say or write? They try to make themselves relevant by "making stuff up". Wheeler to Sens....yeah I could see if White was traded to the Jets.....That's like retention.
There are lot better ways to spend 8.25m than on Wheeler. Retention or sending bad cap back in a trade is the only way a trade gets done. Or else if the Sens wanted to spend that cap, they could sign a better UFA for two years.

I don't think the Flames are going to have much option with Gaudreau and Tkachuk needing contracts. Honestly, I don't know his worth, but I would like the Jets to target him.

No, I wish people could think for themselves.. So I'm asking you...and not some BS you heard from the media, do you think Ottawa would be even remotely interested in the trade you proposed?

Instead of trading the 35 goal scorer, they will trade Monahan and/or Lucic

I 100% agree with you. I just said this is someone I hoped the Jets would target. doesn't mean Calgary has any interest in doing it.

They must be. Doesn't matter what I think. That would just be my opinion, which holds zero value to what these guys know. You cannot argue that. Why? I have no idea. Contact must have been made by Ottawa to Winnipeg about it. These guys don't just make this stuff up for likes.

I don't think it's that bad of a deal to be honest. The cap hit doesn't really matter to Ottawa, Wheeler's actual salary averages to 7.375M per, which, for a top 6 forward, is pretty decent. I think getting any value out of Brannstrom is going to be tough, he might be worth a 3rd round pick at this point, so packaging him with a very late 2nd round pick for 2 years of Wheeler isn't terrible value. Wheeler was very close to a point a game the last 3 years. He's getting older but I think there's still some value in him. Worst case is he plays a year and a half they flip him at the trade deadline as a rental and have one of the internal players such as Greig move in if he is ready. It would likely end up being a net neutral deal, and they might even make it out ahead with retention, as I think Wheeler as a rental could bring a decent return.

I don't think that Wheeler should be the Sens first choice though, I would try to go the free agent route as there is at least 10 really good free agents available at this time that I would have interest in. My first pick would be the obvious one, Claude Giroux. But there are others, and ones that won't cost a ton, such as Burakovsky, Niederreiter, Copp, Mikheyev, Trocheck, Marchment, Nichushkin. And if they want to spend $$ they could always take a run at Forsberg, Malkin or Kadri.
