Geno and Letang Stay

Description
Reports indicate Letang will probably return on a 3 year deal for about $8M AAV. The situation with Malkin remains very fluid but my best guess is that, if he returns, it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $7M for 3 years (he's still worth it but I'm hoping he settles closer to $6M). Given these projected contracts, this mock is a combination of what I think will happen + want to happen.
**I used the average AAV from Evolving Hockey and Dobber Hockey

Trade Pettersson + McGinn for draft pick. Ideally, Dumo would be traded for a draft pick, but Pettersson seems like the most likely candidate to be shipped out. If this happens, I'd like to see McGinn packaged into the trade to clear more cap space. I assume it would take us giving up a late-round pick to ship him alone, so adding him to a Pettersson deal (who is probably worth around a late 2nd) allows us to move him easier. Trading Pettersson does have it's advantages; while his defensive impact was better than Dumo last season (see JFresh and Dom @ The Athletic), he faced lower quality competition and played fewer minutes. I think he's worth keeping but there's also a chance he's just a really good 3rd pairing defenseman without higher potential.

Sign Vincent Trocheck. With the cap space, the Pens can make a splash in free agency. I liked the idea of signing Trocheck given the rumors of Geno's potential departure, but I like the idea of Trocheck playing behind Malkin even more. This would be an expensive 3C but I think it makes sense to limit Malkin's usage as he plays out the 3 year contract. Another possibility is to use this cap space to sign Rakell as Sid's RW, move Rust to Malkin's line, and move EROD to 3C (or RW with Carter taking C).

Sign Mason Marchment. Great defensive abilities with the ability to generate a lot of offense. Granted, his production last season is likely unsustainable, Marchment is my #1 target this offseason for the Pens given what his contract is projected to be.

Sign Evan Rodriguez. Here's hoping we see first half EROD for the whole season.

Sign POJ. Really enjoy watching this guy play, I hope Hextall and Sullivan give him the chance to succeed (also very tough to give him minutes when he's behind Letang's best linemate and Matheson)

The rest of the team is pretty much intact. It seems like O'Connor and Zohorna will see more minutes and I wouldn't be upset to see them spend a lot of time on the 4th line (although I'd love to sign Colin Blackwell from TOR). I'm also hoping to see Zucker regress back to his pre-Pens form. I'd be shocked to see his shooting percentage to remain where it's been.

Not bad, pretty solid team and I like the idea. Marchment will get more though. RW depth could be a concern too.

I'm not so sure Marchment makes more than $3,200,000 per year for having one decent year in the NHL on Florida.

Signing Trocheck for 3C won’t happen. Someone will pay him more and make him a top-6 on their team. Put him on Malkin right and it’s better.

In this scenario it would be awesome to see Geno on Sid’s wing for a whole season. ERod can go away tho. Spend his cash on a 3C. Couldn’t agree more with your thought on Marchment being too target.

Trocheck won't get much more than $6M. Slotting him on Malkin's RW is probably a better idea tbh, though I'd rather just re-sign Rakell and move EROD or Carter to 3C.

Would be an interesting combination, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it but Malkin still brings a ton of value to the 2C spot. I think EROD should be re-signed in most situations, though. The RW market is pretty bare and we lack a lot of depth. Nico Sturm would be a great 3C target if doing all this shuffling and could be had at a lower AAV than EROD (~$1.6M)

Eh they're mostly paying to take on McGinn's $2.75M contract. Pettersson can feasibly fetch a 2nd round pick so cutting it down to a 3rd for taking on the extra cap isn't ridiculous. And it doesn't necessarily have to be the Sharks, I just know they're looking for a LD and could potentially take on McGinn's contract (who isn't even a bad hockey player, he's just playing about $1.5M below his current contract)

Evolving Hockey projects $2.5M and Dobber Hockey projects $3.9M, I took the average (though I trust EH's projections the most). Not sure why Marchment is being projected so low compared to others, but he did really only produce a ton last season at a very unsustainable rate (something like a 70 point pace as a 3rd liner). He's a really good winger and, if the projections are close to reality, I'd scoop him up in a heartbeat.

And RW depth is one of their biggest needs going into the offseason -- too bad the free agent market is pretty lacking. I didn't include him, but I think Alexander Nylander has potential to be a great depth piece next season and I expect him to be re-signed. They can also QO Kapanen for ~$800k. I know his performance has been very lackluster, but the tools are there and he's still fairly young at 25

Seems like there’s a bit of individuals on this site that think a 3rd or 4th would get pettersson to San Jose. I think he’s overpaid as well for not bringing much offense. I could see the sharks paying that for him though, not so much McGinn

Yea I’d rather them just resign Rakell as well honestly
