There is no logical deal between NJD and MTL for the 2nd overall, because MTL doesn't have a high enough pick to flip picks with them, and Montreal isn't trading Suzuki or Caufield. Montreal doesn't have any real veteran impact stars like a JT Miller, where with an extension, people would understand NJD trading the 2nd in this kind of draft for a player like JT Miller or a Matthew Tkachuk.
If there is any truth to Montreal and Ottawa talking, and Montreal gets 7th overall, then they can probably make a deal with the Devils. If the Devils shopping the 2nd overall is an indication that they aren't too happy with who is available there, it might not cost as much as normal to move up from 2nd to 7th. If they can get the 7th overall, the Calgary 1st, and a few other picks/B prospect type pieces, maybe they do that deal with the logic being that they don't see much difference between the players available at 2nd to 7th.
Something I would love to see done, which teams rarely do now, is the Devils and Canadiens flip 2nd and 7th this year, with the stipulation being the Devils have the right to flip picks with Montreal next year if they choose. Montreal wouldn't do that because it is too volatile. It would make for a fun season though.
