No Need To Panic

Description
Caps thoroughly outplayed Pittsburgh all over the ice, no one can argue differently. Only reason Caps didn't win in 4 or 5 games was because Fleury played like Holtby and Holtby played like Fleury.

Caps-Pens series:
62% possession
62% scoring chances
65% expected goals (basically high danger chances)

If you don't know what that means it means Caps utterly dominated the Pens. All of this to say is Caps can still make a good to great team next season. They will be getting younger and quicker as Alzner, Williams, Oshie, Winnik, and Orpik are gone. Will they be a President Trophy winning team? Probably not, but you don't need that to win a Cup, just make the playoffs and hope you get some bounces and don't run into a hot goalie, ie Caps forte.

Below is a strong ass team. It might not be perfect, like Barber might not be ready for top 6, but there is almost $5M in cap space to fix it assuming the cap hit will be $75M. Also doubt Campbell will come here, he'll probably retire but then that means you have $7M to mess with.

Fleury played like a 2 time Stanley cup champion and Holtby did not. Simple as that. The problem the caps should panik is that they do not have a draft pick until round 4. They also do not have any high end forward pospects outside Vrana. Some B chip D prospects and 1-2 A level prospects that are 18 and probably not close to the NHL. The right side is weak and Vrana is playing the wrong side. Still think this roster makes the playoffs as a wildcard. I think kuzy makes a little more towards 7 but that is a null point bc still within the cap.

Always next year right???? must suck to be a capitals fan. Very overrated team. Had a hard time against Toronto and couldn't close the deal in Pitt. Every year is "There year" yet never able to capitalize on it. Great season team, but cant ceil the deal in the playoffs

A lot of great prospect coming, doesn't matter they don't have a pick 1-3 round in a weak draft (plus would bet money they trade for a higher pick).

Top 6: Vrana, Barber, Gersich
Bottom 6: Boyd, Stephenson, Walker
Top 4: Bowey, Siegenthaler, Hobbs, Johansen, Djoos
Bottom 2: Lewington, Priskie
Goalies: Samsonov (will be elite top 3 goalie down the road), Vanecek.

...Have you heard of Ovechking, Backstrom, Kuznetov, Holtby, Carlson, etc. A lot of great players.

Only reason it wasn't a sweep against TOR is they had 12 lucky goals to Caps 2. It was insane amount of flukey goals that were scored.

I completely agree with you in saying that we thoroughly dominated the Pens. But there are a couple of things I'd do differently. First, I want Oshie back. If we can bring him back on a deal that isn't long term, that'd be perfect. But if we're going to go for it again next season, we need Oshie back. We are a completely different team with him than without him. That was evident in the games that he missed this season. Also, if we can trade Orpik and give up a guy like Vanecek for it, I'd be willing to do so. To me, Vanecek is the odd-man out in our net. Holts is there for a while, Copley can backup, and then Samsonov is going to be an elite goaltender for a long, long time. I see Vanecek as being expendable. That way we have more cap space to work with and bring in a better supporting cast for next season

Vrana is either going to be a top-6 or a Beau Bennet type and I am leaning towards the latter. You have like 4 top 4-D ceiling type players but 2 are several years out. You can never really tell with goalie prospects and how they will adjust. Baber is either a boom or bust but will be a mid-6. and the bottom 6 people you have I see nothing special that you would want to keep on a winning roster. Unless they are guys you want to hit , pk, and fill ice time. but I don't think they will be productive.
