Literally zero incentive to trade Dubois

Created by: bnormie46
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2022
Published: Jul. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As a jets fans why would we trade for a 35 pts producer in Dvorak with 3 years left on his contract who’s struggled to stay healthy and a low first round pick? Wouldn’t it just make more sense to keep Dubois for 2 more years and let him walk in FA or move him in 2 years at the TDL if the jets still suck? Keeping him for 2 more years atleast we get a top line Center who’s a game changer for the team. If they trade Dubois they might as well blow it up tomorrow.

Amen. Also I don’t think the Habs are in a position to give up the assets it would actually require to entice the jets to move Dubois now. Doesn’t really make sense for either party. And that’s not even getting into the cap he’ll the Habs are already in.

He’s still an RFA for 2 years, he has not choice what he wants. Hellebuyck, Scheifele, Wheeler, Dillon and DeMelo are all leaving in 2 years anways. Their rebuild is on 2 years. You either try to push to win in a 2 year window or blow it up. Getting rebuilding assets doesn’t help you win.

The problem with Dubois is that he has already shown that he will literally quit on the ice if he's not happy with his situation. The Jets are already at a disadvantage for trading him based on his public intention to go to free agency in two years. I don't think there's any way they can also risk having him step on the ice and embarrass the team by dragging his butt around because he wants a trade. The only real choice is to trade him now for what they can and just be really annoyed that he is the kind of guy that doesn't respect the way player rights and retention work.

He’s a UFA in 2 years, his play on the next 2 years affects what his teams will offer in in FA. He’s got no choice but to play his best because him acting bad lowers the amount of money he makes in FA. Dubois never asked for a trade and there was no trade request, he told the team he wished to play out his RFA years and then explore his options on UFA. Mathews did the same thing, he only signed long enough so he could be a UFA then he’s going to cash out on FA

Maybe. He also signed a 2x5 with Columbus so that they could more easily trade him and he only made it 5 games before he quit to force a trade. He also forced a trade when he was playing junior hockey too. I think the reality you have to just accept with him is that he's gonna do whatever he needs to to get his way and trusting him to be a professional or honor agreements is a risky proposition at best.

I don’t blame him, I wouldn’t want to play for Torts either. Look at Barzal, Islanders chose to fire Trotz because Barzal didn’t like his system and threatened to leave in FA as well. There’s a lot of players in the league who threaten organizations when they don’t get their way. Even Malkin as well, went on a media tour claiming the pens don’t care about him anymore because they didn’t want to overpay a guy who’s only going to play half a season. Or Eichel who forced his way out of Buffalo because the team kept messing up their roster and he wanted nothing to do with it.

But you would trust him to not do that in Winnipeg?
