That’s a pretty rotten deal for New Jersey. Petry isn’t that good, Drouin is not good. Makes total sense!

The first is going the wrong way in that NJ/MTL deal. Petry is a negative asset and Severson is good

Montreal would stop at the Jersey deal, no sense in giving up 2 more potential lottery picks for a guy who wants to test FA in 2 years.

I know, that's the point Trade Petry + Drouin to NJ for Severson + 1st. Then wait 2 years and sign PLD in FA, keeping potentially 3 shots at Bedard. NJ could make the playoffs but they could also miss them.
