Trading one of the big three for defense

Description
If the leafs want to be a contender they need to improve their defense, it's just a fact. They have so many offensive prospects it makes sense to trade one to get some defense and still have so many left. Here I traded nylander for Ellis, but it could be marner being traded and it could be for a different guy like oel or faulk. I don't know if this trade would be considered fair value but the principle of the trade is Marner/nylander for defense and each side could add more pieces to even it out, I'm not attached to this specific trade. Signing a shutdown dman like Alzner helps the d even more and could have good chemistry with reilly. Even without nylander they still have Matthews marner brown kapanen Hyman soshnikov gauthier rychel timashov bracco and grundstrom for prospects with veterans like Kadri bozak jvr komarov and Boyle. Building them like this would leave them with a solid goalie in Andersen, a caps-like defense (Lots of depth, no clear cut no 1 d but many no 2s) and a young offense with loads of potential. I want to hear from leafs fans who they would trade of the big three on offense and for who on defense. This team still has loads of cap space so when the time comes to resign Marner Matthews and more, the money would be there.

In all honesty I don' t think we have to trade one of our big three for a defenseman. I would rather get low cost guys and just have a stacked offensive core. We'll never be the Preds but we could be an iteration of the Pens

I agree. All scenarios where TOR trades their offensive core for anything else are out of the question. They could give up on a draft pick though. Also one of the proven vets could be considered (VanRiemsdyk?) as a part of a trade.

Yea Ellis is nice, but he's got only two years till UFA. Maybe in two summer of 2019, he's a Leaf and you still have Nylander. Pens have done very well with a no name defence, with really only Schultz this year playing really well, and then it's a bunch of guys, competent guys though. Leaf fans seem obsessed with RHDs and thinking that they need four, five or six NHL above average Dman. Few teams have that, if any.

Defense wins championships. the pens still have a great no 1 d and immense defensive depth. It will be needed to win any cups

If they signed Alzner (to a contract less than 5 mill a season) I don't think they need to make a trade like this

Matthews/Nylander/Marner are the core forwards to Leafs future and will not be traded, remember that to be able to pick such talent you have to have a disaster season and finish at the bottom...Leafs for years to come will finish at middle of the pack in worst circumstances (injuries being major concern to any of the big three or Andersen), so wont have those type of picks.
If you look at Chicago; Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook all drafted by CHI, you think they plan on trading any of them in the near future?, so there is your answer, Leafs wont do either with their core. Draft and develop is the road and it will take a few years to contend yet, is not time to rush trading away assets for a quick fix.
