Created by: JimBenning
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2022
Published: Jul. 24, 2022

  1. Dobson, Noah [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Reasoning: Canucks get younger, and add an exciting young RD to play with Quinn Hughes

Note* Dobson re-signs with the Canucks ($6x8)
NYI
  1. Focht, Carson
  2. Garland, Conor
  3. Miller, J.T.
  4. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)

Reasoning: Islanders are in their contention window and need to improve their offense. JT Miller and Garland are first line players, that should give them a lot of depth. A Barzal-JT Miller center punch put Islanders back in the contenders picture

Note* JT Miller re-signs with the Islanders ($8.5x6). The 1st round pick is Top 10 protected

Can Canucks fans plz stop pretending the Islanders would trade Dobson for Miller? It’s a uniquely terrible idea and it won’t happen unless Lou decides to channel his inner Mike Millbury. You can’t be a win now team if your roster is made up of fossils. Plz delete this. Thanks!

Also Kerfoot isn’t worth a third round pick after the Bjorkstrand deal.

It’s not a bad offer, but isles still say no. To actually contend, you need a #1 all situations defenseman. A team hasn’t gone far in the playoffs without one.

Big Top pair RHD who can skate like Dobson are like unicorns In the NHL, there is really no path to acquiring Dobson using JT Miller.

This trade does not make the isles a better team, so I’m not sure how this makes them contenders. I get it, you’re trying to justify the isles giving Dobson to the Canucks but it just doesn’t make sense at all for the islanders

It’s not nearly as bad as the other ACGM proposals. Still don’t think the Isles would do it though. The only way I see it being considered is for Pettersson

Yeah but they didn’t offer Pettersson did they? They offered an old man instead.

Not as bad as other ACGM proposals doesn’t mean much. I wouldn’t trade Dobson because top pair righty defenseman who can do what he can are extremely rare. They shouldn’t move him because they can’t contend for a title without an elite top four defense. Whatever positive impact Miller has on the forward core would be completely undone if they lost Dobson.

Isles just traded for Romanov so he has a long term partner anyway. He’s not going anywhere.

JT Miller is the same age as Huberdeau and Gaudreau. He just turned 29 and is hardly "old". He is in his prime, and has many more good years left. In the last 3 seasons, JT Miller is 12th in the league in points and 29th in hits. He would single handedly take the Islanders to a new level, he out-played Pettersson for the majority of his 3 years in Vancouver. And Petey is better than Barzal. Islanders also get Garland in this trade, he is 17th in 5v5 points in the NHL the last 2 years, while playing for Vancouver and Arizona, two of the worst teams in the NHL in 5v5 goals. Garland is also 26 years old. Not to mention, the 1st round pick in the 2023 draft which Islanders can keep, or flip for other assets at the deadline (like Pastrnak or Kane)

Funny cuz the Canucks say no to. That's the dumbest over payment I've seen for Dobson lol

Isles just traded their first to get Dobson a d partner. They didn’t do that so they could trade him for JT ****ing Miller.

A forwards prime years are 22-28 YO.

Congrats to Miller and Garland, still not enough for Dobson. You don’t seem to understand that the isles run the offense through Dobson.

Think what you want, it’s not enough for Dobson. He’s not available. To get the islanders to even consider trading him, it would need to include a high end center in his prime

Remind me how many points Barzal has, in the last few years??

Regular season + playoffs
Pettersson : 262 GP, 104 G, 239 P, 0.91 ppg
Barzal: 411 GP, 104 G, 349 P, 0.85 ppg

And this doesn't even take into account for Pettersson's 2-way skills (D-zone stick checks, pass blocks, puck recoveries, steals...). And JT Miller has out-played Petey the last few years, if he can do that, he would easily be the best player on the Islanders, plus you get Garland and a 1st. I highly doubt Lou declines. This guy paid a 1st round pick (#13) for a 3rd pair defensemen in Romanov. If anything, he would settle for less.

Barzal has less points than Pettersson because his best linemate last year was Zack ****ing Parise. Get real lol

Barzal is a proven winner and he does it with garbage. Lou traded the 13th pick to get a 22 year old top four lefty d man who played with Sorokin for two years in the KHL. Give me a break.

Pettersson is better than Barzal, but he plays with much better players. Barzal has carried the islanders to two straight ECF.

Romanov is a #4 D man, stop BS to push a narrative. If you offered JT miller and 4 1st rd picks for Dobson , Lou would still decline. Dobson is his draft pick, he’s a 6’4 franchise defenseman.

Your team has constantly made terrible moves and Rutherford/Alvin have basically shown that will continue

The league told Brad Treliving that the FLA-CGY deal was the first actual sign and trade in NHL history.

Maybe this opens the door for more of these deals, but it's just such a hard deal to execute.

Pettersson isn’t better than Barzy and his two way abilities are greatly exaggerated like Dubois in Winnipeg lol.

Romanov would not even be the Canucks best young defensemen, as Rathbone is a much better skater and more gifted offensively. Rathbone was named to AHL All Rookie Team last season, and was arguably the best defensemen in the AHL at age 22. Romanov's ceiling is a Luke Schenn type player, and even that seems unlikely. He makes hard hits and is decent defensively, but there is little offense to his game. He can also be a turnover machine, especially when playing against high quality competition. Lou got absolutely fleeced in that deal.

Also the moves Rutherford/Allvin has made so far:
-Trade Hamonic for 3rd
-Trade 3rd for Dermott
-Sign Kuzmenko as a UFA Free Agent
-Sign Arshdeep Bains, Nils Aman, Filip Johansson as a RFA Free Agent
-Sign Mikheyev, Lazar, Dakota, Kalynuk, Delia in Free Agency
-Extend Rathbone 0.850x2 and Martin 0.762x2

None of these are bad moves. They have made upgrades to the roster for relative cheap value. If anything, they have added too many Top 6/9 wingers, that Canucks need to trade few of them to make room. Assuming they keep JT Miller and extend him, which I think what will eventually happen.

If anything, Pettersson 2-way ability are underrated. Unlike Dubois, Petey is always the first guy back in the D zone. He always moves his feet and has his head up. He competes hard in the D zone, and is always using his speed and stick to create turnovers. His elite hockey-iq allows him to read plays before they happen, so he is able to block a lot of passes and recover pucks. His only flaw is that he is still too skinny, so he can sometimes get beat up by tougher players along the boards. But that will change as Petey gets older and builds muscle. Apart from Barkov, I have never seen a young Center be so good defensively, so early in his career like Pettersson has been. And he will only improve in this area
